Question:

I WOULD LIKE A PAINLESS BIRTH. is it possible?

Okay I know "painless" isnt a good word to use, I mean you are squeezing a baby out of a small area.. but one of my biggest phobias is birth. I'd like to know the most pain free options out there. I'm more concerned about the actual giving birth part than the contractions. Also I know epidurals help with contractions but is there anything to numb the birth canal?

And please dont tell me that once I'm holding my baby I will forget all about the pain because I definitely will not. I have the lowest possible tolerance for pain and I wont be holding the baby until she's washed cuz (as much as I'm going to love her, and already do love her) I dont want to touch the nasty stuff that will be on her the second she is born. This was an unplanned baby and before her I never wanted kids, just because of labor. So help me please?

I prefer to hear from someone who has given birth

  1. LOL NO, OR JUST TRY AND OPT FOR A C-SECTION

  2. hey sweetie, i know the fear you have darling and its cool. the best wonder drug to have for a natural labor is a epidural. it numbs you from your waste down and you wont feel no pain for hours. its a wonderful drug to have and use i believe and even tho some people say its bad, i think its a good thing and at least your going through the birth. good luck and congrats.

  3. hmmmm....you dont quite sound ready for it all.......how can you say you wont hold the baby till it is washed...thats just rediculous.....second of all you said your not so worried about the contractions but the birth is whats scaring you...my god.....the contractions are the killer pushing the baby out is a breeze! if anything its quite relieving compared to those horrid contractions.......its something you have to experience before you really know what its all about.....i gave birth to my daughter 8lb 4oz completely drug free and plan to give birth to my son in a few months drug free too....its really not that bad!!!

  4. The Epidural numbs your hips and area... so you don't feel the contractions(as you said) but also has a numbing effect on the v****a too.

  5. Epidural will help with contractions, but they have to wait until at least some of it wears off before you can give birth (you have to feel to push) so it won't even really help you (and it's dangerous for you and baby). There's evidence that epidurals make you be in labour for longer, also.

The birth canal will numb itself after it's been streched. The good news is that pushing (when it really hurts) doesn't take so long.

There's a cream available in Health food stores called Tiger Balm; it's extremely relaxing, numbing, and said to speed up labour as well...you just rub it onto your stomach during labour. The main trick to having an easy birth is to RELAX...if you're all tensed up it will be really hard. Take some birthing classes to help you learn breathing techniques and what to expect. Good luck!

  6. The closest you can come to a painless birth would be an epidural or C-section. It is doubtful that the hospital would give you a c-section unless you need one for emergency reasons, so making plans for an epidural would be your safest bet.

I had an epidural with my first and although the contractions hurt, I did not feel my baby coming out of my v****a nor did I feel the episiotomy or stitches afterwards. The doctors did have to push for me (and my daughter had a suction birth).  It wasn't until the next morning that the epidural wore off and I felt the pain of the episiotomy!

  7. Yes epidural is the one to use for a painless birth.. I have had three kiddo's and I have had epidurals for all three births. I have used them due to big baby's my smallest was 9 lbs 15 oz.

  8. I went through labour july 2007, my pregnancy was also unplanned and never wanted children either. the same as you im not good with pain at all, throughout the pregnancy i was so worried about the labour and birth.

When it finally happened and i was in labour ( dont want to put u off at all this is my experience) I didnt cope well at all. at 3 cm dilated i was climbing the wall and couldnt believe i could get the baby out!

I had all the pain relief going, but b4 the epidural i felt as if i could have died.

8 hours of being in labour then finally gave me the epidural which within minutes just totally numbed me and i felt nothing!  didnt even know when to push the midwife had to tell me.

In the end i had to be taken down for an emergency c section for the sake of my babys health or she wouldnt be here today!

But yes it is true, once u hold your baby in your arms it is all worth the pain and everything you go through. After the birth i said never again, i would never go through it again. Im now 11 weeks and 3 days pregnant with #2 due march7th 2009.

p.s the pain after a c section is painful aswel tho, it took me about 2 months to feel my total self again.

    Hope this is some help.

  9. If you have an epidural it will numb you totally from the waist down so you wont feel the birth at all

But really it is not a good idea, there are side effects, and in my opinion it is much better to do it the natural way and feel the whole thing, it will help you to bond with your baby

  10. An epidural numbs everything, including the birth canal.

I gave birth to 2 of my children naturally (not by choice, I wasn't going to let a military doctor possibly paralyze me) It Hurt, I'll tell you that.

But I did forget....I forgot enough to have another child naturally. You were made to endure birth. It is only bad while it's happening....and trust me you can deal with it.

The child I had with an epidural was blissful. I got to the hospital, got numb, went to sleep and woke up just in time to have a boy. My husband was like "is that it?" Yeah it was that easy.

Just get numb immediately and you will be fine.

  11. actually the contractions are the most painful part of giving birth. when you are delivering the baby its not that bad because you are so active on just getting the little stinker out. pushing applies counter pressure. I don't remember feeling much, if any pain during pushing. I didn't have any drugs at all with 2 of my births. I brought up this concern with a friend of mine whos a professional labor coach and came to my deliveries.  She said alot fo women are afraid of the actual delivery being painful and are suprised that its not that bad. The only real painful part is when the head crowns and you get this burning sensation(commonly referred to as the ring of fire) but its brief.

Don't get a c-section. Its more painful than natural birth. the recovery sucks and its not an easy way or painless way to deliver. I've been through both.

you can always ask your doc about a paracervical or perinial block. Its not as common these days but some might still do it and theres always the epidural.

  12. An epidural will do the trick.

And I'm sorry, but until you have given birth, you will not know that yes, you will forget the pain once the baby is born. I also have very low pain tolerance, yes I had 2 drug free births, and would do it again!

And nasty stuff? You do realize without that your baby wouldn't be alive!

Geez, you don't sound too cut out for all of this!! I, plus my partner and all the grandparents all gave both my kids hugs and kisses without them being washed! The best part is having that baby out and placed on ur chest. Its called bonding!!!

  13. Relax, I felt the same..I wanted drugs as many as I could get to relieve the pain, but i was too late so natural it was and yes it hurt BUT the hours flew by and once a was pushing it actually hurt less that the contractions as I had something to focus on and not just lolling around in the bed whimpering! I can promise you that although you dont forget the pain until years later it does instantly stop the second that baby is out. And yes they are slimy, but that is the last thing you will be thinking about!

  14. erm a epidural would numb you so that you wouldn't feel a thing i had that with my 1st as she had the cord round her neck

  15. i have a terrible fear of birth and was molested as a child so i discussed birth plan with my obstetrician and she suggested for me to have a c section. i know people disapprove but giving birth is not an option for me as a was traumatised as a child. mine is also a phobia and i will not put myself thru the trauma of it, its my body so my choice. good luck!!

  16. You can have a c section. The downfalls? It is more painful in the long run. You will need to wear a catheder and it hurts to pee, walk, p**p EVERYTHING. You can't laugh, cough.. It takes at least a week for the pain to start to really subside. You will also get stuck in the hospital for 4 days. I would just get the epidural, and deal with it. It will all be over eventually.

  17. Actually,I found giving birth better than the labour.....contractions really hurt...but when giving birth its just a whole lot of stretching....as long as you don't push when the shoulders are on the way out, there is minimal damage....then it just stings when you pee but you take urals to take out the acidity so it doesn't hurt....the doc or nurse tells you when to stop pushing so they can help getting one shoulder out at a time so there is no tearing....What you are after is an "Epidural"...that will (generally) numb you from the waist down for the whole thing... A needle in my spine scares me a h**l of a lot more than giving birth...

My son had to dislocate my tailbone (Coccyx) to get out...and that HURT...All I had was gas for my 22 hours of contractions & a completely natural birth & I'm d**n proud of myself...It seems Americans opt for C-sections a lot of the time & Australia is starting to see the same trend...The stuff you are saying about not touching you baby straight after the birth is a bit worrying.....You are sounding like a good candidate for Post Natal Depression....You are worrying too much...Have you been attending antenatal classes? That would help...Women do this everyday...we are made to give birth...
