Question:

I Want To Leave My Parents?

I'm going to be a Sophomore in college next year and I've already got everything set-up for it. I have my dorm, class schedule, meal plan, etc. And my parent's have now told me that they don't want me going back there again, and instead I'm going to enroll in the community college.

I don't want to. It doesn't have my major, my classes, or anything appealing to me. But my parent's are telling me they've decided.

Is there any way that I can still go to my school...without my parent's consent? I'm 19 and I only have $3,500 in my bank account...Plus, my car is nontechnically theirs.

So, my main concern is how can I get down to my college (It's SIUe and it's about 5 hours away from here) and...what do I do?

  1. You have a dorm, so all you need is a friend to take you there. Legally you can do whatever you want. Get some student loans and a job if you need financial help. Also, most schools have bus routes near them if you still can't find transportation.

  2. Unless you don't need financial help from your parents to finish college, you need to work it out with them. You can not get financial aid yourself until you are 24. And I don't know what nontechnical means, but it sounds like the car is theirs.

  3. First off, have you or your parents already PAID for your fall and spring semesters?  (or for now, fall?)  If so, then hitch a ride with a friend, tell your parents you love them and will miss them, and go.  You are technically an adult.

    HOWEVER:

You need to be sure to keep a good relationship with them and keep them informed about you and what your up to.  You will still need their tax information when you apply for financial aid NEXT year, and if they are supplementing  your college costs you certainly don't want that to stop... Dependent freshman can only borrow so much, if you are attending an private or out of state school..... this may be the reason your folks don't want you to go.. not because they don't love you, they simply can't afford to send you any more.
