I Want to Move to Puerto Rico After Graduate School...Where is Best?

I'm currently a college student working towards getting my phd. in Psychology and ultimately becoming a Psychologist. I have lived in the Southeastern United States all of my life and have never left the continental US, but I have been thinking about moving to Puerto Rico after I am finished with school.

I have just started researching places to live there and so far I like Carolina and Isla Verde. Can anyone help me out and tell me good places I could live and work as a Psychologist, preferably in an office/clinic with other Psychologists, or possibly in a hospital.

I want to be somewhere nice, but not somewhere that is mainly a tourist area meant for visitors. I want to live in the "real" Puerto Rico, but still have a really nice home and neighborhood.

  1. Carolina, Santurce, Bayamon are really good they sit right outside San Juan which is always really busy.  Any of those small cities bordering San Juan if you want to stay in the Metro area.

Consider money things down there are really expensive, and without a good paying job, things get difficult for alot of people, most of who I know work two jobs or are always working at their regular one.

Isla Verde is also really nice, too expensive though, and you will be around alot of tourist for it is a big strip.

As far as offices, sorry dont know any.

  2. cidra. pr

    i ♥ it there

  3. Since you are still in college, and you have about 6 more years to go, I will tell you that by the time you are done with your doctorate things will have changed.

I recommend you visit P.R. while on a semester break, and see for yourself your ideal places. You will be earning a decent income so that you'll be able to perhaps purchase a $800,000.00 home in a nice area.

    Good luck in your endeavors.

  4. I recently moved from Puerto Rico to the US to get my PhD. I was born and raised in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. I also lived for 6 years in Mayaguez. There are many good places to live in Puerto Rico, but I don{t think Carolina is one of them. Although San Juan (the capital), Carolina, Bayamon, Guaynabo, Toa Baja and   Trujillo Alto (known together as the Metropolitan Area) are among the best places on the Island to do business and live comfortably, the quality of life is not as good. The Metropolitan Area has the worst traffic (bottlenecks), the highest violent crime rates and bad urban planification. If you value your job a bit more than your quality of life and want to live in the Metropolitan Area, I would suggest to find a place either in Trujillo Alto or Toa Baja. You could also try to live in Caguas (wonderful, safe city just 20 minutes away). The problem with these options is that houses are very expensive in those cities. If you want to get out of the Metropolitan Area in search of better quality of life, I would suggest Ponce. This is second most important city outside the Metropolitan Area. It's a beautiful (but hot and more or less expensive) place to live, do business and raise your children. However, it also has a high crime rate. If you want a quiet, relaxed, not so expensive place to do business and raise your children, you could try living in my hometown Arecibo. Although I find my town to be boring, the roads are good, there are a several schools, universities, hospitals and shopping malls in the area. It is well connected to other nearby cities and is only 50 minutes away from the Metropolitan Area (where the party is). It is the largest city (by extension), the sixth in population, but the safest and most inexpensive city of the most important cities on the Island. Hopefully this will help you a little bit. Good luck!

  5. Carolina is one of the cities around the San Juan (our capital) metropolitan area.  Other cities around the area include Bayamon and Guaynabo, and obviously San Juan.

Isla Verde is basically a tourist area within Carolina full of hotels, restaurants, fast foods restaurants, a beach, the airport, etc.  But there are also apartment buildings in Isla Verde.

Check other areas of Carolina or try Bayamon, Guaynabo, or Hato Rey (San Juan).

  6. I recommend you the metropolitan area.

  7. If you want to be at the center of the hassle, move to Hato Rey.

  8. OK. ISla Verde is a tourist area not the real puerto rico. you will like so much Caguas, PR. it is a excellent town. only 15 miles away from San JUan, you get there in abut 20 to 30 minutes. it is my town for twelve years and i love it. Caguas is the recent addition to the metropolitan area but it is not a touristic area. try to look in NOrth Caguas,
