Black stuff.....a better description would help.  Is it oily, smelly, sticky?

It sounds like you may have hit some oil in the ground. It could be motor oil that some one has dumped off, or are you in texas.

it's oil...sell it and you'll be Rich ;).

get a mop and alot of kitchen paper or if it's alot get a bucket of soapy water and throw it on then get a jaggy brush the scrub it away.

How deep were you digging?  

How much "stuff" came up and is it still coming up?

What does it smell like?

Are you on a septic system or city sewer?
