Question:

I Would Like To "Refinish" My Computer Desk?

The only problem is that the surface is scuffed up from about 5 years of daily use.

It's a thick laminate over particleboard, but very sturdy that can last another 5 years.

Can i use anything to at lest improve the looks and smooth out the surface scratches.

It doesn't have to look new. I'd just like it to look a little better.

It is a perfect use of space and has just enough room.

Since I live in a one bedroom apartment, saving space is very important.

  1. You cannot refinish laminate. Either relaminate or get a new desk. Polishing won't work either; you'll be rubbing right through the finish on the laminate. With the money you spend on laminate, and the time you put into the work, you could just buy a new desk.

  2. First use a rubbing compound with an electric orbital polisher. This should take off most of the scratches and stains. Then finish the job with polishing compound. This will leave the surface smooth and shiny.

  3. You have several options:

    - get a piece of glass cut to fit

    - strip and refinish top only

    - get a quarter or half-sheet of laminate (Formica, WilsonArt, etc) and laminate it on the top.  Trim the edges with a flush cut router or spend a lot of time with handsaw and file.

  4. Since it is over particle board you do not have much to work with---use it up and throw it out!
