Okay so I threw this toy for my dog and it landed in a tree in my backyard. I wasn't tall enough to reach it so I did what I now realize was really stupid - shook that part of the tree.

What then happened was about ten or so birds came flying (falling? :[) out of the tree and sat on the ground. Only a couple are moving, and there are also two bigger, male ones zooming around at head level when I come outside.

I think i may have seen a very small (baby) bird in the grass and I am afraid I've hurt some of them.

Will they calm down and go back on their own? When would it be smart to look for injured ones?

  1. whatever you do, do not touch them. if the mother bird smells human scent on their baby, they disown the baby and it will starve to death.

  2. They may not be able to fly, or fly well enough to get back into the nest.

Check and see if there are any bird rescue centers near you.  If not, you (or someone who has a ladder tall enough) might be able to don some rubber gloves and put the birds back into the nest, if it's still intact.

In the meantime, you need to get those birds off the ground before any neighborhood cats get wind of them.
