I accidentally dropped my ring in the toilet and now it's stuck. I don't want to call a plumber. What to do?

It hasn't gone through the pipe system yet. It's actually stuck on the OPPOSITE direction of the pipes into the little space on the edge of the toilet seat. I have an Eljer toilet model and was wondering what I should do. I don't want to call the plumber because I can't afford one. No one used the toilet and I believe it's still stuck. Thank you!

  1. Hard to follow your question completely.  If its stuck between the toilet seat and something, reach under the rim at the back of the seat and find the two nuts that hold down the toilet seat.  unscrew those and remove the toilet seat and see if it frees the ring.

Is the ring in the water, or out of the water?  If its in the water, try the shop vac idea.  but clean out the shop vac before you use it for this job, it will make finding the ring inside the shop vac much easier.

  2. I simply can't picture what you're describing.

Any way you can reach it? or hook it with a coat-hanger?

Take a photo, and add it to your details if you're still stuck.

(8/6/08) I see what you mean from the diagram, your ring got flushed in thru the tank!  Chicagir.., and John are right.  If the ring won't fit thru the  jet opening you'll have to disassemble the toilet to turn it upside down and jiggle it out.  You might be able to retrieve it (empty bowl of water 1st)with a piece of two sided tape stuck to a popsicle stick.

  3. It sounds like your coat hanger is working -almost. Just keep at it. Don't be afraid to put your hand in there. I know it's a toilet, but your hand is washable. Maybe you can see it with a little mirror.

    Good luck,

  4. Turn off the water supply to the toilet. Get a wet dry vac and try sucking all the water out of the toilet and hopfully the ring will come out. If that doesn't work after several trys then you will need the remove the toilet by draining and removing the tank. After the tank is removed you will unscrew the bolts to the bowl and remove the bowl. Tip it upside down or take it outside and run a water hose through it. Ring should come out. You will need a new wax ring to replace the toilet.
