  1. Fire departments usually charge for false alarms after several responses to the same location in a fixed period.  My fire department, for example, charges a property owner a $180 fee starting on the THIRD call for every false alarm that we respond to in a 180-day period.  Sounds unfair perhaps, but it has dramatically reduced false alarm calls which tie up valuable emergency resources and delay them from responding to real emergencies.

Your parents can call the local FD and ask if they will be billed for the response -- every local jurisdiction has their own rules on this matter -- most however do allow you a few freebie false alarms before they bill you.

Sounds like you learned your lesson already.  Best wishes.

  2. it sounds like you are making the whole thing up.  If the fire department came, that is their problem.  If it has a test button, it is there so you can test it.  You are SUPPOSED to test it. And it is not the kind of thing you can do accidentally
