I was going 40 in a 45 zone and it had just rain for a few minutes. I saw the stop sign when it was a bit to late. I applied my brake to attempt a stop and what seemed all my wheels locked up. I slide sideways threw the intersection and feel a strong acceleration. I turn the wheel sharply to the left(my rear in is going left) and release all my brake I straighten the steering as fast as my nose will point forward. I come to an oddly feeling calm stop with my car about 75 yards from the intersection and my right rear tire on the grass. I pull completely off the road and get out to make sure I did not black out and hit someone or something. All is well, no one harmed no damage to property. I get back in the car take a deep breath and proceed home. A few seconds later a sheriff comes from the opposite direction but does not pull me over. I'm home now typing this message to you. What would you do or have done different?

  1. nothing could be done.brakes dont work well in the rain. what i usually do in the rain when i need to stop is to, tap the break a good 2 or 3 times before i get to the stop sign.

  2. what kind of question is this??? you are silly..  you just want to tell someone what happened.  this is one of those things that nobody sees happen and you are a little starstruck afterwards, and you feel all jittery and stuff.  just sit back and enjoy your adrenaline rush... :)

  3. i wouldn't even worry about it

  4. You checked for damage to other property, people, etc... So theres really nothing more to do. I understand you ran a stop sign. If you would have told the police officer you ran the stop sign- he would not have given you a ticket any way because he did not see it. He would have commende you for your honesty.

  5. Gas is $3.60 a gallon - driving tripps must become a matter of necessity rather than pleasure.     All the sliding and hard turning and skidding tells me that You WERE DRIVING TO FAST FOR ROAD CONDITIONS...  The area is probably residential and most streets are 25-30 mph.   Atleast they are around my place...  Slow down--today is sunday...

Slow down for the rest of week..  The sound of smashing fenders and busted glass is a terrible sound and ear ringing..

    Slow down....

  6. nothing, you did everything fine. just be glad you didnt get hurt or hurt anyone else! and just make sure you look out for stop signs in the future

  7. well that must've been scary!!!

    I'm glad your alright.

and your very lucky a cop didn't get you. I'm sure your fine. Don't worry about it.

    = ]

  8. I would have flagged the sheriff down and confessed to my crime.

  9. there really isnt anything that you can do. and if you report yourself for this you will just end up causeing yourself more trouble. and going to the police station reporting your self could be quite humiliating. i dont believe you should do anything about it. it was an accident. nobody was harmed. hope i helped.

  10. No problem, just stop twice at the next one, and it's all good.

  11. I would be thanking God that there was not a serious accident caused, and ajusted your speed to adverse weather conditions!

  12. What you did was fine, you caused no damage to anyone or anything so what's the harm?

  13. just kept on going and not worried about it. If you did not get pulled over then luck was on your side.

  14. Pay mooe attention to your driving, especially in the rain. Don't listen to the radio or talk on your cell phone, or eat, or apply make-up etc. When the road is wet, drive slower and allow for a greater stopping distance. Driving is no joke. You could have killed someone because of your carlessness!

  15. that was fine. let it go.

  16. I would of done what you done mate ....drove home the only thing i would change is how u controled your car....not brake so suddenly in a panic just lift on and off so you can gain control.....but thankfully your alright.

  17. if you went 75 yards with the wheels locked up you were doing a lot more than 40. you need to pay attention this is the kind of stuff that can ruin your entire life.

  18. Your fine! Just pay more attention, you always have to be alret when driving something could happen in a split secound! I doubt you will get a ticket, unless they have photo inforced light (which most dont).

  19. Go home and lay low. You never know when they are going to come after you for it. xD

  20. I wouldn't have hit the brakes like that because you could have ended up coming to a stop in the middle of the intersection.  Better to go fast through the intersection than to stop in it or skid through it.  Your reaction was instinctive and I can understand why you did it but when you're past the point of no return, don't hit the brakes.  It would have been safer to go through at 40 mph.

  21. if i saw no 1 coming id drive rite through it.

  22. I wouldn't do anything different.  Sliding through intersections happens a lot.  If you didn't get pulled over right then you'll be ok.

  23. you did the right thing (if thats what your looking for here)

in the future use more caution while driving especialy in the rain

  24. 1. Do not turn the wheel sharply when skidding.

    2. Unless you have anti-lock brakes, do not brake hard enough to lock the wheels, especially when it has just rained.

    3. If you know where the stop signs are (from driving the same road before), slow down when you know one is coming, even if you cannot see it yet.

  25. Go turn yourself in to the police and repent.

  26. Nothing, but I would consider making sure my next car has ABS (anti lock brakes) as it makes this scenario less likely to happen.

Now have a drink and praise your choice of deity!

  27. Sounds like you did a lot more than I would've/have done.  Most people would have just kept going.  Good job.

  28. don't know

  29. Well if no one is hurt, no damage, then just forget about it , oh and if you are ok too...

  30. i would of stayed home, then nothing like this would of happened.

  31. The smartest thing you could have done, you did -- take your foot off the brakes as soon as you realized your car had spun out of control.

I would not have done anything differently.

Glad you are safe, your car is not damaged, no one or nothing was involved and the police did not see your violation.

Hope you still feel OK in 2 days because sometimes a muscle injury may take 24 hours to show up.

    Have a blessed day,
