I adopted a 5 month puppy from our local shelter they told us he chiweenie but he has long legs and is 23lbs ?

is it possible that he is cheweenie do they get that large?

A full-grown standard dachshund averages 16 lb (7.3 kg) to 28 lb (13 kg), while the miniature variety normally weighs less than 11 lb (5.0 kg). So if it took on more of the weiner side, and it was the larger one,  it might be bigger than you expected. I don't know where the long legs come from.

I have what is called a reindeer Chi that is really long legged. She looks like a mini walking loft bed next to my other Chis. So depending on the type of Chi she is part of ...yes long legs could be consequences of that mixture of breeds. Mini doxies and are 10 lbs and less, tweenies are 11 to 16 lbs. and a standard go up to 32 lb and more. So if it was a standard Chi and a standard doxie, expect height and bulk.

Chi-hua-hua + Dachshund mix??

A Chihuahua is a small dog, it's true, but a Dachshund can get that big.

Your "chiweenie" could get that large...or maybe there was some other gentleman paying court to his Mamma....

Congrats on rescuing a pup from the shelter...but do know that when you get a dog from the shelter, you can't really be sure about his pedigree.

Why not?? - Dachshunds come in two sizes -- Miniature (under 11 lbs) and Standard (11 lbs+).  Some Standards get to 25-30 pounds -- especially the European dogs.  And some Chihuahuas are not all that short-legged.

So if you dog really is a mix between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund -- that weight is not impossible given the combination.

Your dog probably gets its long legs from the Chihuahua.

There are different styles of Chihuahua. My son has one that's full blooded but is all legs, and is over a year old. It gets its bulk from the Dashund, some of which can go 30 pounds plus. Not all Weenie dogs are "minatures." I had a minature that went almost 25 pounds. So It sounds quite feasible that your long-legged Chiweenie is over 20 pounds. My brother owns a chiweenie and it's not full grown, and is already 20 pounds.

For those unfamiliar, a Chiweenie is a Chihuahua -Dashund (weenie dog) mix.

i'm trying to think what a chiweenie could be.  if he is that big, then i guess they get that large.
