So I have an old Evinrude 80 outboard engine and I can't get it to run. I checked the fuel delivery and it seems to function, and the plugs are less than perfect, but they work.

the electric starter runs turns the engine over and then the engine stops. I can't get it to run for more than a second. We tried starting it with some starter fluid and it ran with a continuous spray of starter fluid. When the other person stopped spraying it the engine would run for 3 seconds tops and then it would just stop.

What could be the problem?

  1. What is the condition of the fuel you are using? Has it been stored a long time without stabilizer? As long as you are getting spark and fuel delivery I would think it may be the fuel itself.

  2. You have to give us more info. eg. year model etc. Also when was this engine last in running condition, was it winterized.

  3. Check pump op. and fuel flow. If engine has not been run for a long time carb may be gummed up. Overhaul carb..

  4. It's deffinately a fuel problem. First remove the gas line from the fuel pump. Thats the thing with a black plastic cover with a s***w in the middle. Then pump your primer ball and make sure gas is going thru the gas line. Next, hold your thumb over the gas line and pump the primer ball and look for leaks anywhere in that line. Next replace the main gas line and do the same with the line going to the main carb. Next replace that gas line and pull the plugs from the carb bowls and pump the primer ball. Check the condition of the gas that comes out. If it is at all funky, rebuild the carbs. Oh and make sure you are using new clean gas with the right oil mixture.

  5. It sounds like you have a bad carburetor. Have you tried rebuilding it? Perhaps the jets or the valve (or both) are clogged or fouled.

  6. since it ran while using the starter fluid, then the problem lies in the fuel not reaching the cylinder. make sure fuel is reaching the carb, pull off fuel line at carb and see if fuel runs out of line. if it doesnt you have a blockage in tank or line or fuel filter. if it does run through you have carb problem or  fuel pump problem. probably dirty carb, pull carb and pull apart and clean. that should fix the problem. put new plugs in they are pretty cheap.
