  2. it means STOP

  3. well i think what you mean is half halting its when you squeeze your fingers, thighs, and calfs. and it should slow the horse down.

  4. hi, i think you mean half halting. its not a complete halt eg, if you are trotting and want to walk you bring your horse to a half halt.

basically slowing down with out stoping.

  5. half halting is used to slow a horse down, but not break the gait. its used for collecting a horse. i've been taught to half hault by sitting deeper and "giving and taking" on the reins. if your reins are the right length and you have a responsive horse this is done by simply squeezing and then relaxing your fists.

  6. a half halt is to get a horse to pay attention to your aids and improve his balance. It is when you slowly pull back on the reins then release (this is not a slow manuever this all happens within half a second to a couple seconds, depending on how your horse is moving). For Example: My horse is a VERY hot TB who needs constant long half halts, i pull back and hold the reins for a few seconds then release, but I give him leg at the same time. Its like a give and take situation. This is typically seen when a horse is racing around an arena going too fast, but you dont want him to halt or fall back to a slower gait. It is also when you want to gain impulsion and balance. But you cannot just pull back on the reins, you also give some leg too, to create impulsion and prevent him from slowing all the way down or stopping. Its like telling your horse to pay attention and remind him you are still up there. It can be used just once or a few times. Depending on your horse. Its almost self explanatory, its half of a halt, not a full stop.

  7. i think your asking what a half halt is. Its when you pull the reins and release rather quickly (not jerking). instead of asking a horse to halt (stop) completely puling and realeasing quickly will tell him to slow down in his gait(:

  8. bareback is missing some parts to their answer. You don't just pull on the reins, in fact, that's the last thing you want to do. It's more of a body re-positioning, to regain your balance, regulate your speed, and stop your horse from running through your aids and contact.

You stretch up tall, grip with your lower leg, and breathe. If you need to check your horse with your reins, because he's not attune to leg aids yet, it should be just a small on-off pressure-release type thing, massaging him with your ring fingers. It's not so much a slowing thing (though it is often used as one) as it is more of a rebalancing and regaining composure type thing.

  9. Sorry it's really far too late at night to be getting into this ( 4am again) it's rather complicated to explain I'm afraid.

You already have some good answers but

here's some reading material that you may find helpful.
