OKay, we are officially getting to horses (and to all those people who say, oh you shouldn't get two unlessed your experienced, well, 1. I am experienced and 2. horses need a companion because they are herd animals and there will be two people needing to ride.)

We are clearing a whole lot of bush (about 2 acres) and most of it is shrub and it only took 1/2 an hour to clear quite a bit (not including the large trees we will be taking down but don't worry, no all of them.) So I was wondering, how long do you think it will take to clear a...2 acre? forest? We are also going to bring in a bulldozer (were already promised one) and getting out the stumps.

Also, we went and seen the two horses and they are a bit...well...hyper and the one doesn't like to be away from the other but the other does not care. Anyway, we aske dthe owner if we can work with them all summer (trying to break them) and getting them better. If we eventually don't want them, then it works out for the owner.

  1. i think bulldozing 2 acres of forest is awful. imagine all the animals you will be killing, and taking homes from.

  2. i'd say if you were hiring someone who knew how to do it, it could be done in a weekend.

if you're going to try it by you're self maybe 2 weekends.

second, just a suggestion, if the one horse doesnt like to be left alone, work with that one more, because i've had the same issue with my horses. it got to the point i'd have to find someone else to ride with or i couldnt take either one out of the field. you may have 2 people wanting to ride, but it does become alittle troublesome with them always wanting to be together.

and since you didnt mention it, i'm gonna to suggest a vet check and ask if you had a second opinion on the horses.

i think ya have a good plan, and hopes for the best for ya

  3. I think it depends on how many trees you are gonna cut down. Remember that they need some shade. It would probly take an hour or two or three i guess.......

As for the hypo thing i think you should take the one who doesn't care if he's away from the other horse first and only have him/her for a few days. sorta like weaning them like foals!

    Good luck!!!

  4. Im not sure about the bulldozer etc

But with the horses i think it sounds like a GREAT plan. i say go for it

  5. It's hard to guesstimate the time involved to clear your "forested" 2 acres.  You need to look up on line and find out which trees are deadly to horses.  Horses WILL chew on trees and some such as black walnut and oak are deadly to them.

Depending upon what the wood is, you might be able to sell it and have enough money to pay for your fencing of the 2 acres.

It would probaby be best if you ask the owner of the equipment that you're going to be using if they'd have an idea as to how long it would take to cut down the trees and pull out the stumps and fill in the holes where the stumps were.

If you can use the wood yourselves, then you could build yourselves some shelters and or a round pen to work the horses.

    Hope this helps.

  6. dont clear a lot cuz horses like trees and shade

  7. well i didnt read everything u said cuz it was to long but i can tell u that more than one horse is hard .i had two and i ended up never wanting to go to the barn and i would end up taking care of just one and not the other ..its hard work and it is good to give the other horse a friend .2 acres is kind of small ! try boarding them some were els so that then theres less stress on cuz u dont have to feed or muck and worm ect.
