I already screwed up this semester of high school?

I just recently got diagnosed with panic disorder and the anxiety right before I go to school just kills me. Then when I get into my classes I have horrible panic attacks and I can't handle them. I haven't been to school in 7 days. I already missed the most school that your allowed to, which means I failed this semester. Is there anyway that I can do homeschooling (like american school for those of you who know what that is) and still graduate in January? I need 3 3/4 credits & I live in Michigan (right next to Detroit).

Oh! And by the way, I do take medicine for my panic disorder. I just got on it about a week ago, zoloft and ativan. The ativan makes me more anxious when I take it so I stopped taking it. I can't leave my house without getting really anxious. I don't know what to do, my parents are really pissed at me and I need to graduate!

  1. I would contact your school board and see what steps you can take to graduate on time. Since you have a medical condition I don't see why they wouldn't try to accommodate you. And since you live in Michigan, I would think that they would be more willing to help since they (Granholm) would hate to see the ever declining number of graduates further decrease.

  2. try homeschooling try and sit down with ur guidance counceler even if they have to come to u to talk to u. Explain ur situation tell then how u feel and maybe they can work something out. Ur parents r probably just worried about u and being upset is there way of being worried. Good luck!! I hope u walk in January's graduation

  3. are your parents mean?

anyways keep taking the medicine that you stopped and that will help

  4. well i just got to high school and sorta have something like that but does your chest make it feel like you can't breath cuz that iz what mine does and some ppl would suggest and inhaler but i take ibuprofien

  5. Just a thought, have you checked into schooling as a homebound student.  In my state it requires a note from a doctor but they allow you to do all your work at home with supervision from a teacher who comes by your house once a week.  You might see if thats an option, also I would suggest that your parents help advocate for you.  Teenagers are rarely taken seriously.

  6. Take this to your doctor not yahoo answers.

  7. I am really sorry that your parents are not more supportive.

I'm not sure what the rules are in your State if you are in the US.  I live in MA and when my daughter was in high school she went through the same thing that you are going through now.  She has since been diagnosed as Bipolar.  She was able to get a medical excuse note from her doctor so that she didn't go beyond the allowed days to miss school.

However, she did eventually quit school in the 10th grade and she got her GED instead.  She just couldn't function in a traditional school environment.  She is now a freshman in college.

  8. don't stop taking your medications call the doctor and tell

them and your parents have no right to be pissed at you.

I'm sure the school can address your problem and help

you out talk to your prinicipal and the school counselor.

  9. There are many different online and Homeschooling options out there. A national online school that I am familiar with is Connections Academy and it is completely free. The only set back is that they do not have 12th grade until next year. Hope this helps. You can visit: www.connectionsacademy.com for more info.

  10. I believe that there are no homeschooling laws in Michigan, (I'm from Michigan and I wanted to be home schooled and I looked into it) I don't think credits play a role in homeschooling,. there's websites you can look at. If I remember right you can order books off amazon and ebay that go along with your grade, you should be able to receive your diploma on time. :] Goodluck!

  11. think of school as your home . It takes time but you can do it

  12. go online and put in homeschooling on the internet.  they have schools that let you work online at your on pace but you should probably start looking into it right away.  i dont think you have enough time to graduate by january but it is worth a try.  good luck to you

  13. Just drop out and immediately get your GED.

  14. well, my older brother did a night course and didnt have to go to school, but he still got to go to the graduation ceremony with his class. you could try doing both and getting the credits at the same time. i dont know if they have that in michigan (i live in minnesota, so thats kinda close anyways)

but if you JUST got diagnosed, then why were you so good in school before that you may graduate earlyish? i mean, thats sort of an exuse, no offense.

  15. Stop having panic attacks and making excuses for not going to school. The decisions you make now will effect the rest of your life.

  16. I do not know too much about home schooling as such but I do know that many school systems provide for tutors to come to the homes of students who are ill or suspended.

You will  need a medical note and need to forward that to the appropriate person in your school who could be either your guidance counselor or the health office. You or your parents may need to fight for it.

  17. ur not screwed, just try your best and work hard. think, it's not the end of the world!

  18. i think your panic attacks are a state of mind. You might just need a little you time.. try going to a quiet place and closing ur eyes and just relax and think about your "problem". I would also recommend that you go to a spa or have a fun time, whatever relaxes you. think about ur problem and try and figure out why you have it. believe me it will stop. dont stay on meds.. doctors only give you them because it makes them money.

  19. You'll probably have to talk to your school.  If you have a medical reason (and panic disorder is a medical reason) for not attending school, they may have to provide you with a tutor or something.  I hope your mom will help you with this.  Their being pissed at you won't help you get over your panic attacks.  If she won't help you, find a teacher or counselor at school whom you trust to talk to on the phone.  Take care.  You could always get a GED.

  20. Sounds like you and your parents, along with help from your doctor, should be able to find out if your school system has a homebound type program for you. Usually there are for kids with health related issues. You ought to be able to do some kind of home study program in conjunction with your school  that will allow you to graduate.

    Good luck....panic attacks ARE tough

  21. I used to have panic attacks and anxiety as well in school. uncontrollable shaking hands, my stomach in knots, cold sweats, and just a number of other things. There is a good thing because I actually cured myself. When i was in highschool i actually got so sick of how i was feeling and started to read up on what was going on with me and how i could help myself. I am not a naturalist or anything but my mom took me to a doc and put me on zoloft... and i HATED IT!!! I just felt very fake it was messing with how i interacted with people around me and i just didn't like it so i just quit taking it. I knew i still needed help so while i was reading i discovered 2 very cheap over the counter natural herbs Kava Kava and St. Johns Wort. The doc told me it wouldn't work and bla bla bla but he was wrong and it did. It takes a bit to work like maybe 3 or 4 days til you can see the results but it really calms your nerves down and your anxiety will clear up. Once you start feeling better you have to face your fears, you may not like the sound of that but life is about interacting with other people and how to deal with hard situations. Trust me high school is one of the hardest things I've ever done. So i understand pretty much what your going through. Its almost like jumping into a cold pool. Your kinda wigging out at first but once you bite down and jump in its freezing for like 30 seconds but then your ok. I strongly recomend not to homeschool. You don't learn nearly as much about life as kids going to school that have to put up with other kids and teachers and what not. You will be kind of put into the front row and it will be you. Life isn't easy and if you decide to homeschool you will be missing out on a lot of things a regular school has to offer, sports, clubs, friends, enemies and how to deal with people you dislike. they are all very important and the sooner you learn about how to deal with these types o things the sooner you will overcome your distress. I actually felt so much better that i decided to go into the Marines and then i served honorably for 4 years leaving as a sergeant. If you told me that when i was going through what you are now i would have laughed in yoru face. Face your fears and if you don't like the medicine there are those 2 that worked wonders for me. You just have to overcome this. Once you do you will be a happier and healthier person and you will thank god that you beat it and your not the scared girl with the anxiety anymore. I really wish you the best of luck and hope this article helps you. (also summer school when i had what you had it messed with my studies as well so i just took summerschool and finished them, if your in your graduation year you might not get to walk with everyone else but at least you have a diploma and not a GED, those things are absolutely worthless)

  22. My son, 16 and a junior this year, just started home schooling.  He is doing it to get a jump start on college.  He will have his diploma by the time he would have finished this school year as a junior.  Sometime in late April to early May he should be done and ready start college.  He uses Kaplan University on the net.  It costs about 200 a month to do.  Check around.  I have "heard" (don't know if it's true) that there are free online schools.  Hope this helps.

  23. Every state has its own rules regarding homeschooling. Most public school districts resent this because fewer students means fewer federal dollars. So the school will lie and make if ver difficult for you. Check out hslda.org and find out your rights in your state. You may be very pleased with the info and perhaps your parents will relax.

Too bad about the drugs you are on. Hope they don't s***w you up too bad.

  24. I know how you feel. I have panis disorder and it can be terrible. It sounds like this is new to you so eventually your going to be able to get used to that terribel anxious feeling and talk yourself down to keep you calm. The medications should work and the ativan should calm you down. I take zanax, that really works for me when i am in the middle of a panic attack...

You should get a Dr note and have a private talk with your teachers to see if there is any way you can make up what you have missed. I promise things will get better for you.

I got my 1st panic attack at age 15 and now I am 27. It was terrible for me at first but I learned to just sit down and close my eyes and focus on my breathing when a panic attack comes. Try that the next time you get one. Go somewhere you will be by yourslef, close your eyes and take deep breaths.

    Take Care and Good Luck.

  25. You need to go back to your doctor and ask him what you should do.  You should be seeing a therapist or psychiatrist on a regular basis.

There is no shame in seeing a therapist or psychiatrist.  Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.  No one should think that staying healthy mentally or physically is wrong.

I think you should tackle the problem of your panic attacks.  Have you considered yoga, music, and meditation as a solution to your problem?

I wouldn't worry so much about graduating.  There are always options for getting your diploma.  You could take classes in the summer, or go to adult school.

Either way, there are always solutions for resolving acquiring your diploma, but your panic attacks are something you need to resolve NOW in order to live a happier and more productive life in the future.  I hope I helped.
