I always check the doors many times, twisting the locks etc to make sure its locked.. And sometimes even though i know that the house lights are off already, but i cannot control but need to stare at it for like 4-5 times to make sure its off... And also when i always go out, i have a tendency to keep fidgeting with the lock to make sure its locked... Is this a mental problem or does it have to do with my low self-confidence...?

  1. OCD possibly?

    Talk to your doctor.

  2. I'm not a doctor, so this isn't medical advice. However...

It's unlikely to have anything to do with your self-confidence. It's far more likely to be a manifestation of obsessive-compulsive behavior. In cases of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), someone feels compelled to perform an action, generally multiple times (sometimes a specific number of times) before it feels "right." Or there's a sense that if you don't do it, or don't go through a prescribed routine, something bad (otherwise undefined) may happen.

The most "common" portrayal of OCD is repeated washing of hands. But it can be any number of things--alignment of items (such as shoes) in a particular way, touching an item (such as a door k**b) a certain number of times, and so on. Or--to give a real-life example--a kid in school taking a multiple choice test who only can answer "A" or "D," never "B" or "C." So if the right answer is either A or D, he gets it right. If the correct answer is B or C, he can't mark the B or C--he marks A or D even knowing it's wrong.

Doctors don't exactly know what causes it. It's classified as a mental disorder, but is likely due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. If treatment is needed (and often it isn't), drugs such as Zoloft are sometimes used.

You might speak to your family doctor about it; you'll probably get a referral to a specialist.

    Hope that helps.

  3. you might just be making sure or just being safe
