Long story short, I'm hispanic and my best friend thinks that tortillas with brown sugar on them are 'just like sopapillas!' Sadly, I don't think she's ever eaten a real sopapilla. But I live in Arizona and she lives in Washington, so I can't just have her come over and eat some. But would sopapillas hold up in the mail? I'd really like to send her some!

  1. They wouldn't. Blech.

Get her to buy some at her local Panchos.

  2. I sincerely doubt they would.  Once she got them, she'd have to reheat them.  And being in the box, even wrapped, I can't imagine they'd retain any consistency or flavor.  They're best eaten fresh, right away, straight from the cooker (or fryer).  Just tell her how they are actually made.

  3. In reality they can be made several ways and your friend is partially right. Although you never use cooked tortillas for sopapillas you should only be using the raw dough.

But I would save my money and make sopapillas like my family makes them at our restaurant. We just use bisquick biscuits, flatten then out poke a few holes in them and deep fry them on 350 until light golden brown and only flip once.

Once out of the oil we dip em in a sugar/cinnamon mix and serve with strawberries and whipped or honey and butter.
