I am a swimmer and season has just started and I again this season am not wearing goggles. I hurts and my vision will be blurred for a couple hours afterward. But could I be doing any permanent damage to my eyes?

  1. I also used to do this. It's very uncomfortable, especially when you have a cold pool with high chlorine.

I would suggest doing some serious goggle shopping to find the right pair for you. I just use swedes. They're about $1.50 each and if you watch the olympics ever that's all anyone wears. (They wear speedo and other goggles just for advertisements)

  2. Come on, eyes are pretty delicate things. I'd wear goggles.

  3. I swam almost my entire young career without goggles. In college, I got goggles merely to keep my contacts in (so I could see the pace clock) during practice. These days, I can take them or leave them. Sure, my eyes sting for a little while after I get out, but I've never heard of anyone experiencing long-term damage from swimming without goggles.

  4. No, you will dry them out, cause irritation, cause pain, maybe experience a drop in eyesight, but after about a week of not swimming you should be back to normal.

As well, it has a lot to do with how chlorinated the pool is. Concentration range from 0.5 p.p.m. to 7.5 p.p.m. The higher the concentration, the more discomfort.
