  1. stick to pedigree m8

  2. I am also confused about this. I know that onions are bad for dogs, however I used to give my dogs garlic and there are garlic tablets available for dog. I will be interested to read the answers to  your question because I would like to know if the cautions on onions extend to other vegetables in the onion family. I think that garlic is in the onion family together with leeks and spring onions. Although I give my dog "left overs" after her usual food, I exclude anything which I think is from the onion family, consequently I also exclude garlic.

Before anyone SHOUTS I don't buy microwave meals or anything which is prepacked, I cook proper meals

  3. Small amounts of garlic are healthy for dogs.

In large quantities, it is toxic, but it would be very difficult to be able to get your dog to eat enough of it at once to feed them a toxic dose. You'd have to be literally force-feeding it to the dog.

    .

  4. Garlic has been used for years as a herbal remedy for dogs. Because it belongs to the same family as onions, people wrongly assume it's bad for dogs.

Many exhibitors and obedience trainers use liver cake containing garlic as treats when training - my dogs have been having it for around 30 yrs (not the same dogs, obviously!) and they've never had any ill effects. It's very, very rarely they ever have fleas either, despite the fact I don't use flea treatments unless absolutely necessary.

  5. Its only deadly if you feed the dog an entire clove, and no dog will actually and willingly eat that much garlic.

Small quantities (like that in dog food, treats, vitamins, etc) are fine. My dogs take a daily multivitamin where garlic is the fourth ingredient. Its in small (VERY small) quantities, and its daily, and they've been on it since I've had them (eight weeks, one year, four months -- 15 years, 1.5 years, 8 months now) .

  6. Why...with all the good dog food out there would you want to give your dog garlic?  It takes all kinds, I guess

  7. yes it is deadly

  8. garlic capsule s are good for keeping flees away but if your worried ask your vet

  9. Hi there,

My vet clinic is lovely and we get a quarterly newsletter. (A bit odd but actually quite interesting!) Last month's was "common dog poisonings" It really shocked me as I had no idea, it also explains why they are poisonous - mostly as they are chemicals their livers can't process.

Chocolate: symptoms of posisoning - fits/convulsions, sickness, fast heart rate, high blood pressure, coma - death! :(  (My dad had a german shepherd who broke into the kitchen cupboard on xmas day and ate a 1kg bar of galaxy choc, when we got back after visiting our nan the dog was unconcious and surrounded by red sick - she was in the vets for a week but was eventually ok - choclate really is bad news, dog choc is missing the toxic chemical from the cocoa bean.)

Grapes and raisins: "eating various amounts can cause symptoms ranging from gastro intestinal distubances to acute kidney failure"

Onions and garlic: "ingestion of these items can cause massive damage to the red blood cells leading to anaemia, these signs may present up to 24 hours after ingestion."

Xylitol (artificial sweetener): "if swallowed can lead to hyperglcaemia, which could lead to seizures, liver damage and interference with blood clotting."

Coffee and cocoa: same as chocolate

Most treatments need the dog to be sick within hours or stomach pumping. But some require blood transfusions!!!

I have no idea how garlic tablets work as they were supposed to reduce fleas but may accidentally kill your dog!

Hope that has been mildly interesting! ha ha ;-)

  10. You have been misinformed - its not deadly for dogs.

  11. It's not as toxic to them as onions are but it's still not a good idea to give them any just to be safe.  Here's a site to help you on what is bad for dogs to get ahold of.

    Good luck.

  12. well i give my dog a lot of human food including chocolate and shes still alive!

so i wouldnt be too concerned

  13. It's neither. In large quantities it can be toxic but you'd have to feed a few bulbs of it.

A lot of people think it kills or keep away worms of fleas - I can promise you it does not!

There's no good reason to feed dogs garlic.

    Chalice

  14. Garlic CAN be deadly in large doses.

    Just like chocolate.
