  1. PRACTICE!!!

I had the same problem til i did it a lot.

  2. Jump roping is a learned skill.  It's the only form of exercise that requires skill in order to fully reap all the benefits of this cardio workout.  Indeed, it's frustrating at first to get the timing and coordination down, but with time you'll quickly get the hang of it.

Start of by jumping with both feet, then work your way up to alternating feet in order to preserve your energy.  With enough practice, say 30 min/day for 4-5 days/week, you should become a proficient jump roper within a couple of weeks.

Also make sure that the rope is of proper length so that it doesn't drag on the floor messing up your timing and causing you to trip, or that it's too short causing the rope to catch your feet.
