I normally don't wake up in a panic attack like state with a racing mind and increase heart rate but i have noticed when i take melatonin pills to try and ease to sleep naturally i wake up like this a couple hours later! i used to take tylenol pm and that has worked better then melatonin but i know it isn't healthy to take tylenol pm over a long period of time so that's why i went over to something else.

Is melatonin known for doing this to people?

  1. There's a part of your brain that paralyzes your muscles when you sleep so you don't move around all night or act out your dreams. The melatonin is making that paralasys last a few seconds longer than normal, so when you start to wake you can't move or control your body for a few seconds. That sets off the panic attack in a lot of people. Your brain is still a little fuzzy, so you don't know what's happening.

  2. Melatonin resets your circadian rhytmns if taken before sleep. I'd assume this could cause your body to panic because of a lack of reference.
