I am 14. I want to be a Marine Biologist when I am older. Does anyone have tips to help me start off well.?

I just want some tips that could help me start off well so I can be a Marine Biologist when I am older.

Learn all of the math and science you can. You will need to know chemistry and basic physics as well as biology to be a Marine Biologist. Also learn to write well and become an expert with computers.

Learn to swim! Get some pet goldfish, collect tadpoles, etc.

The first thing is to really understand what a marine biologist does.  The vast majority of marine biologists never do any work with seals, dolphins, whales, or sharks.  Most of us work with invertebrates, algae, or wave & current dynamics (usually the combinations of all three).  

To be a marine biologist means you will be going to graduate school and likely need a PhD (although there are some jobs for MS folks).  For an undergraduate degree, having a solid foundation in biology is critical.  You do not have to major in marine biology in college.  A major in biology will serve you very well.  Also, you will need a good foundation in chemistry, physics, and math (including calculus and statistics).  Water chemistry and the physics of water motion are critical in marine biology.

So, if you want to do research in the marine ecosystem, I suggest doing as well as you can in your math and science courses in high school, take as many as your school offers, and then find a college that has a solid biology program that will prepare you well for graduate school.

However, if you want to do rehabilitation or training with dolphins, seals, etc., then you should look into wildlife care programs (such as:  http://www.unity.edu/Academic/Majors/Wil... and also take psychology courses.  These teach you more about care and handling that will be necessary in those fields.
