ok im about 5,5 by the time hockey restarts should be about 5,7 i say so anywase i played my bantam house league hockey game this year its my 3rd year of hockey, i was fastest skate in my team and probably in league i have perfect accuracy, can get slap shot wereever but not so fast no big since im foward. But im deciding on should i go for a rep team with checking, so as you know im 5,5 that means im not the biggest guy, i prob cant take a hit that well, i have about 4months intil season starts WHAT SHOULD I DO, i mean if i go in midget rep well like try out i know in tryouts im gonna get owned by getting checked... any ideas? should i buff up? buff my legs up? oh yah! for my legs if i work out my legs will that make me faster skater? also will doing pushups/chinups make my shot harder? im 135 pounds 5,5.. what flex of stick should i use. i aint no defense dont be telling me 100 flex lol. im curently using 67 with it cut. so about 75. is that good? And what do rep team coaches expect?

  1. Martain St Louis...

  2. Core conditioning. Don't fool yourself, little guys can take a hit just fine. The key here is balance. If you built up your core and basic skating you will have better balance, and while a Hit might be hard, you'll still be standing and it won't be that effective.

I'm 5'6 and 135, and I use a senior stick with 85 flex. If you use a variety of shots, that's probably best. If you're almost exclusively wrist shots, use a 75 flex. Stick with senior at this point, not intermediate.

Oh- a little more advice about flex- get a tapered stick. That means spending a little more, like the Easton Synergy two piece that I recommend to everyone, and cutting it won't really affect the flex because all the flex is focused lower in the stick.

As for coaches? each is different but they  usually want you o be coach able, and willing to learn., Take it a little slower and do the drill right.

  3. im about the same size as u and the same age. i have decent speed. so if i go into the boards, i get really low and i always make the bigger guys fall. and dont worry about getting checked, the more u worry, the harder u get hit and the more u get hurt. also, just work on your slapshot without anything to shoot. get the form down first. if you do this for a while, your power will come. i would say an 85 flex would be good. and rep coaches are look for a player who will be playing non-stop, unafriad of hits, can pass, score, skate, and never quit no matter what. i hope this helps.

  4. Size doesn't matter. I'm a girl and when I played hockey when I was 10 I was about 5'3" and I was the tallest. I was still the fastest, and scored most of the goals. I got to play on a triple A team. I had to stay back and play D though. But I was still good as everyone else. There was a kid on my team who was 4'5". He was great. So it doesn't matter. Just try not to get checked if everyones bigger than you ;)

    good luck!

  5. Your fine. You can be the smallest dude in the world and still be good!

  6. Your entering a weird age in hockey the Midget age group is the next level, it kinda separates the boys from the men. If you have a half decent coach he will teach you to take a hit of escape them the right way. Build up your hand and wrist strength and that will help your shoot. And keep your feet moving and your head up and just learn who to absorb some hits....good luck dude.
