  1. Well 1st off, congratulations on passing your road test.

Keep your slip from the road test with your interim license (the blue & white cardboard typed license). This will act as your license until you get your photo id from DMV.

You will now have a DJ license, which has a lot of restrictions: all of which are found in the NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Section 501. The things to remember about when you can drive are:

    1. In Nassau/Suffolk County - when attending work-study, post high school classes, or night school (GED).

    2. From 5am to 9pm, to & from a place of business where you are regularly employed AND accompanied by a parent, or guardian, or a person in loco parentis or drivers ed teacher.

    3. ABSOLUTELY NO DRIVING IN NEW YORK CITY. (This is a biggie, I can't tell you how many times I've pulled over someone with a DJ license and they act/or truly didn't know that they couldn't drive in NYC. This usually means an additional ticket and the towing of the car they're driving. Also, if you get a ticket during this period DMV will suspend your license for 60 days automatically upon conviction).

    4. Anywhere else in NY State from 5am to 9pm.

    5. From 9pm to 5am when going to/from school, place of business.

Also, the previous answer is slightly incorrect, a DJ license only changes to a D license when you turn 18 not 17.

Word of advice - practice, practice, practice and remember what you had to do to pass your test, keep those habits in mind. Never sacrifice control for speed and avoid road rage. Unfortunately a great deal of accidents now are as a result of an individual "driving above their head".

  2. hi! congrats on that!  So now you can drive with your DJ license (they most likely gave you a slip of paper as your interim license) with that you can drive under DJ restrctons until you turn 17. When you turn 17 you'll have a regular D-class license. There are some restrictions for DJ drivers. I believe you have to be off the road by 9pm but the best way to find out is to call your local DMV office. Here is a site that lists DMV sites throughout queens and LI  http://www.longislandexchange.com/dmv.ht...

There you will see the phone numbers and you can just call and ask about restrictions.

    Enjoy! Be safe!
