  1. I believe everyone over the age of 16 now needs a passport to cross the border.

    As for parental permission, it would probably be better your mother's signature was notarized.   But I really don't know the answer for this for sure

You do NOT need a passport to cross the Canadian border by LAND.  You do need your birth certificate...and a photo I.D. is best tho as a minor  it is not required.  You also must have a letter signed by BOTH parents and notarized giving you permission to travel without your parents.  If your mother has custody, this must be attested to in the letter.  They do not always ask for the letter...but if they ask and you do not have it, you will be turned back.
