  1. It all depends on what type of dance you're doing and how fit you are.  If you have experience, it'll be a little easier for you to ease back into things.  If you are just starting out, you may have a few healthy aches and pains, yes.  But you shouldn't have more than you can handle unless you've injured yourself.  Stretch often to keep limber, thus lessening your chances of injury.  Build your strength.  And learn correct technique - it's there to help.

By all means, please dance!  I love dancing and I'm 23 with a child!  Just listen to your body.  It'll tell you when it's tired and when it's in pain.  (Like the one time I got dehydrated at the last matinee of a show, and I knew it was coming b/c I felt horrible)

Take it easy to start and focus on learning.  Good luck to you!  Hope this helps!

  2. How much or how little your body will hurt when you are older really depends on how well you take care of your body now.

Dancers tend to have a "work through the pain" mentality. I've seen girls dance on sprained or broken ankles, wear heavy braces to keep their knees from popping out of alignment and keep dancing through serious muscle pulls - these dancers are in for a world of pain once they hit their old age! Pain will have a tendancy to settle in any injury that never properly healed.

If you take care of yourself and work with a sports medicine provider to work through any injuries, chances are you wont have any lasting pain.

  3. Only if you try to do too much before you are ready. I suggest taking Ballet classes in addition to any other classes you're interested in to strengthen your knees and ankles.

Whatever you do, don't compare yourself to other dancers in your class. Work at your own pace and flexibility. That's the best way to prevent injury!

    Good Luck
