Ok,

I am 27 and want to become a RN(by way of a LVN/LPN). I am not sure whether to pursue both of these programs through community college or Private school. I know that CC requires pre-reqs first and are VERY competitive (time consuming for admittance). The private School in my area (wester career college) offers both programs but is sooooo much more expensive.... PLEASE SHED SOME LIGHT............

Is going to a Private school a good decision or do other ealthcare professionals look down on these sort of schools???

  1. All nursing school admittance is competitive. A community college is going to be cheaper and you get the same education. Healthcare professionals do not care where you went to school, they care that you passed your NCLEX.  If you go to a community college they normally have a year of pre- reqs, one year for an LPV/LVN and one year of RN. It is worth the extra money to pay for NCLEX-PN, because if you do not pass the RN program( which alot of people don't) you have nothing!

  2. skip the LVN and go for an RN.  visit the local community college for more advice.

  3. I know that the CC I go to has an RN program that you can take directly or by way of LPN. One thing I did notice is that even with an LPN license at my CC you still have to have the same pre-reqs (Chem, A&P, etc.) as going directly to RN there. Going to a CC will get you an AA degree, which is enough to get licensed as an RN (in my state at least).

If you want to become a NP in the future, you will need to get a bachelors. I am in my 3rd quarter of pre-reqs at a CC & will be going for a bachelors because I may want to be a NP later on. There are also more scholarships available for bachelor's programs.

A good site about nursing, that also has scholarship listings is: http://www.discovernursing.com/
