  1. If you can control your throttle hand, I wouldn't worry too much about the 600cc's.  I started out on a CBR1000 even though everyone said it was too much for me (ok, they may have been right, but I'm still alive).  Just be careful for a while until you are comfortable with how the bike reacts to different situations.

  2. I recommend you go to the motorcycle area and ask the same question. This is cycling as in bicycles.

  3. I disagree with the earlier writer.  You are exactly my size.  I have owned many sport bikes over the years (I'm 60).  I have a Ninja 250 right now and it's a blast.  It's the perfect way to train for sport bikes.  No, it doesn't have the horsepower for walking away from the competition in the straights, but it will out-accelerate most vehicles on the road in a straight line, and will outrun an R6 in the twisties (I ride in the North Carolina mountains) unless the Yamaha is being ridden by a pro.

I had someone at work tease me when I bought the little Ninja this Spring and I told him that, to put it in perspective, it was faster in the 1/4 mile and top end than any car he had ever owned, and faster than every Harley except the V-Rod -- just slower than larger displacement crotch rockets.  Nothing to be ashamed of.

Get the 250 and learn on it.  You won't regret it.  If and when you are ready to "graduate," you can get all of your money out of it on resale-- if you don't drop it.  Then, if you are really Jonesing for horsepower go 750, not 600.

BTW, I spent many years racing sports cars, and my current stable includes a car that weighs 2,100 pounds and produces an honest 475hp, so I'm no opponent of ground-pounding power.

  4. love this guy above me "I recommend you go to the motorcycle area and ask the same question. This is cycling as in bicycles"lol

  5. You will be bored with the 250 in a matter of months,

    Stick with the R6 :)

Just learn to ride the bike, and try not to kill your self.

By the way, wrong section this is cycling (Bikes)

  6. A 250 is too small even for a beginner. I started 12 years ago on a Ninja 600 and moved to a GSXR 600 then an R6 and i kept the r6 longest of any bike before i bought a brand new R1(which by the way has serious power). My buddy started on an R6 2 summers ago and still loves his bike He's like 5'5 and lowered it a little but  not much cause Yamaha sits a little lower than Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Honda. Its been that way as far as i can remember. I would invest in a decent helmet and riding jacket with armour. Good luck and ride safe.
