I am 50 years old and desparately want to have another child with my new husband who has no children. I have absolutely no doubts this is what I want to do. I have big problems. My biggest problems are that my tubes are tied and over the years I have had procedures to reduce and eliminate my periods. What can I do? How do I know if I can get pregnant if I have my tubes reversed? I remember my doctor saying he did a great job. Can you get inpregnated by other means, if tube reversal is not the answer? But most important, can I carry a baby if I have no periods. In all other areas, I am a very young 50. Is my wish possible for me? Can anyone stear me in the right direction. I live in Massachusetts

  1. You could try but, I won't lie to you at 50 your eggs are very old and the chances are super slim.  I wouldn't even consider trying to have your tubes untied, because even if it does work it takes time for you to heal  And depending upon how they did the procedure it may not be reversible.  My sister lost her DD to SIDS and wanted hers reversed but her Dr told her he had cut a piece of the tube out and burned the ends and there was no way to fix that.  You could try IVF but, At (a very young) 44 I was told that at my age chances were about 5% with IVF.  (This was after 6+ years of trying) and lower with out.  That's a lot of money to put out for such slim chances, but I couldn't give up and we were lucky.  I imagine that at 50 with your own eggs your chances would be closer to 2%.  You could expect to spend about $10,000 a cycle for the actual IVF procedure and anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 on drugs.  It maybe slightly higher or lower depending upon where you live.

The best option for you would be Donor Eggs. (DE)  You select a donor based upon your preferences and she takes the same drugs you would (usually a much lower amount then you would need.) to stimulate egg production.  At the same time you take drugs to synchronize your cycles and prepare you body for the transfer.  They harvest the eggs and mix them with your husband’s or a Donor’s sperm.  (Have you had your husband tested?)   Usually 3-5 days later they transfer them to you and if you succeed you carry your child.  Unlike with adoption you get all the joys of carrying your baby, without the worry that the birth mother will change her mind.  The cost of the Donor is usually about $5,000 but that  can very greatly and if you know someone who is willing to donate you can use them.  If you use your eggs it’s unlikely you will get more than 5 and more likely you will get less than 3 (we had 3 eggs but only 2 were mature)  and you should expect at least half to have genetic problems.  A young Donor will often get enough eggs that once they fertilize you will have extra embryos to freeze incase you need to try again.  A frozen cycle is much less expensive then a fresh cycle.  Your chances with a donor may be as high as 75%.

A third option might be to adopt embryos that someone else has decided not to use.  There is a lot of competition for these so I think you would need to have something to offer a baby to offset the drawback of your age.

This is a short overview and barely touches on the dynamics of fertility treatments.  I’d suggest checking out fertilityover40.com the women there are wonderful and were a great help to me when I ttc.  Also Resolve.org and babystepsforum.com  Good luck.  I love being a mommy at this age and if you really want it I say go for it.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's impossible and I'd be the last one to say don't go for it or you're too old.  It's a matter of how much time you want to spend, How much money you have to spend and if you want to handle the ups and downs if it doesn't work time after time.  If you decide to go for it I pray it works the firt time.

I'd also suggest going to a good clinic.  We switched for our last cycle and traveled to SIRM in Las Vegas (They have quite a few offices in the US) and I loved Dr Fisch.  You can check out their website and even ask the Dr's questions at haveababy.com  They will also do a free consult either in the office otr on the phone.   Good Luck Let me know what happens.  Patti

I noticed that someone pointed out a case of a celibrity who was successful at 50.  Just remember they don't aways tell the truth, they have a lot of money to try over and over.  But it did make me think of something that I've heard can help those of us in the AMAzing age group.  The best I can remember:  They do several cycles to harvest eggs, fertilize and then freeze them.  When they get enough embryos to do (PGD) pre genetic dx on they thaw them and test them for genitic problems and transfer the ones that are (hopefully) good.

  2. First off do not pay attention to the ignorant posters about you having too old eggs.

I'll post a link to show you what I mean, how women your age are conceiving.

Now the thing is your tubes are tied.  Did they do any cutting?  any burning?  This can affect the outcome.

Do you remember the actress Adrienne Barbeau?  She did Invitro with her own eggs and conceived twins, healthy twins.  She was 50.

You can also do egg donor with your new man's sperm.

What procedures have you had done to reduce your periods?

  3. Adopt. You're kind of old to concieve.

  4. im not sure, but i dont think its in your health's best interest to be concieveing. sorry=/

  5. If the tubal litigation is not reversible, then you could absolutely have IVF .... in theory. But I'm not sure that they will consider this kind of problematic procedure if you're 50. The first step for you would be to visit an RE and see about the tubal reversal. Many time they can now fully restore the tubes; it all depends on whether they were cauterized in the process or not. Good luck to you!!!

  6. No.

  7. im sorry but i highly doubt it your 50 years old and your tube are tied

  8. You need to consult a fertility clinic - I recommend Boston IVF - we did all of our infertility treatment with them and they were WONDERFUL!  They have a few different locations in MA.

You will have to do some testing to see if a tubal reversal is possible . . .it not then they will need to check your egg quality and quanitity to see if they could do an IVF cycle. . . they would also need to look at your uterus and your partner's sperm count.  If your eggs are not good, you might be able to use a donor egg . . .which would "maybe" allow you to carry a child but s/he would not be yours biologically but they could possibly use your husband's sperm for fertilization.

Basically there MIGHT be options . . .but you need consult a professional.

    Good luck!
