I can do almost any blue trail pretty well in Maine or NH and have only gone skiing 4 times in my life...Smaller mountains and 160s seem to work really well, but at larger mountains with steeper trails I strugulled somewhat with them and changed to 150s where I was able to tear it up, I am about to purchase my own skis, should I buy 160s so I can learn on them even though I find them difficult on steeper trails?

  1. Stay with the 150's this season, but go for a higher performance ski. If you are renting for the season, have the shop  sharpen the edges and hot wax the skiis. Most beginners use a rental that has little or no response to the commands the skier gives them. These are easy to ski but after about 4 days of skiing your skills are improving and you need a higher performance ski. It should be a pair that responds quickly to bending pressures (like a bow being released when the arrow is shot), avoid a short turn radius ski for a couple more years, no slalom skiis, 16-22 meter radius will be fine.
