  1. There are Asian-manufactured bikes coming into the American market now that are around $3-4K brand new. They are not going to perform or look like a Ninja or a Harley but for someone just learning to ride...  It's cheaper than a Major-manufacturer new bike by about 50% for even the cheapest bike and a better choice than buying someone's headache ( there's always a reason they're for sale).  When you decide to upgrade, and you will, you'll have a fun toy to mess around on or teach someone else to ride.  By time you feel ready for that, you'll know exactly what you want in a bike. Good luck with whatever you decide!

PS  I learned to ride on my buddy's 250cc 4-stroke enduro. It was quite a few years old so he wasn't worried about banging it up in case I dumped the bike (I didn't, thankfully). However, I came pretty close in a grass field next to a school when it came time for the Wheelie portion of my training!

  2. Depends what you are looking for, a cruiser or a sport bike. I am 6'1, 220lbs  I started out on a Honda shadow 1100cc and outgrew it within a year.  Now I ride a Suzuki Boulevard 1500cc.  Whatever you do do not like so many other people do, by a brand new bike and start learning.  Find a bike a few years old so you will not have to worry about damaging it.

  3. get an r1

  4. I myself is in the same position. I am 6' 3" and about 240lbs and would like to get a sport bike myself. I'm a beginner, but did take the motorcycle training course. I'm pretty much set on getting a sport bike, but have no idea which one i should go with being that i am taller and is a new rider AND a lefty to boot. I was told the Yamaha r6 has a big body style, and would work for me by adding a rear set. Any suggestions?
