I am 9 weeks pregnant and have a bicornuate uterus. I have been spotting off and on, is this a warning?

The first time it occurred I went to the ER and had a sonogram done. Everything was fine, but it keeps happening. I have since had another sonogram and everything looked fine. But the spotting is really starting to worry me.

  1. You are probably fine. This is my first pregnancy and I started spotting at week 6/7 and then at week 9 when I ended up in ER and stayed overnight for observation. I was told by my OB/GYN that tiny blood vessels were causing the spotting. When there is loose blood present in the uterus it is normal to have slight contractions to get rid of it, causing "spotting". Broken blood vessels are caused by your growing uterus. Your baby is fine, just get your regular check ups. I am now 23 weeks and I can't wait to hold my baby.

  2. If you have a bicornuate ("two-horned") uterus, they may have separate responses to hormones.  You may essentially be pregnant in only one uterus, especially if they have largely-separate blood supplies.  Your "unoccupied" uterus builds up a lining each month just as it would if you were not pregnant, and is similarly sloughing off the unused lining when a pregnancy doesn't occur in that uterus.
