Im twenty years old. and i do NOT have a passport i do not wish to leave my job or my life but i am willing to do it if this is not resolved. apparently my recruiter refused to file my discharge papers and the milatary has paid me for a days worth of work when i didnt work. so im confusedon why they paid me and where this money supposidly is because i never saw it... futhermore my recruiter has been harrasing me at my work screming and yelling at me telling my that this is not a ife and the only respectible thing is to join the army and go to war he says these things in front of customers and my bosses. i was told that i can move to canada without a passport and file for citizenship. is this true?....does anyone have any advice on this whole situation??!!! god please help!

  1. In this day and age you need a passport to enter any country.

  2. Do a search on "Conscientious Objector Status"

And also support groups in Canada....

  3. Jakson listen to the Ret.Navy Person he is telling you the truth. This Recruter is trying to make his Quota at your expense. What he is doing is against the law so don't go running to Canada. If you still want to join some branch of service take someone who knows the ropes with you.The service has a lot to offer a young person if thats what you want to do. Good Luck.

  4. Let me get this straight. Have you ever shipped out to boot camp? Are you in the DEP program? I need some more information than you have provided. If you have never shipped to Boot Camp and are in the DEP program then you can voluntarily leave DEP anytime. You aren't officially in the military until you have shipped out and signed your second contract. All you have to do is sign a letter asking for release. You aren't AWOL if this is the situation.  Update with better info on your situation.

  5. American soldiers going AWOL cannot apply as refugees in Canada, They are NOT refugees.

Already 2 US soldiers who applied as refugees to Canada in 2005,  have been denied and are this year finally being deported back to USA.

USA will not persecute you for your beliefs that the war is wrong. Yes you will be prosecuted for going AWOL, but not persecuted.  And you DID volunteer for the military, you were NOT drafted.

And dont forget the US tells the world that they do not torture.

It is NOT our problem if the US government tells lies.

  6. You're not AWOL, you're seriously confused.  If you didn't ship-out to boot camp, get your hair cut and get an ID card then you are not in the military and you never were.

You were in DEP (Delayed Entry Program).  The fact that they had you sign a contract and swear into DEP is meaningless.  A good percentage of guys and gals in DEP fail to ship-out each month and it drives the recruiters nuts.

If you did not go back to MEPS (Military Examination and Processing Station) on your ship-out date, swear into the active duty (This would have been your 2nd time to swear-in.) and ship then you have been automatically dropped from DEP.

Further, it's AGAINST REGULATIONS of all the services... Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines... for a recruiter to threaten a recruit that he/she must ship or face charges.  Your recruiter can be busted in rank and heavily fined.  His career can be seriously threatened by this behavior.

Email me your recruiter's name and phone number.

In any case, this is not Vietnam.  Canada's highest court said, and its legislature affirmed, that Americans avoiding service will not be allowed to come to Canada.

  7. I do not know Canada's laws on awol people anymore.  There use to be a time during the Vietnam War when this was possible, but I believe that has changed, especially at these times.  You might want to check some Canadian urls online to find out.

  8. No

  9. yes. they are. they in fact were due to deport a deserter he is in limbo even aftera supreme court ruling there.

there is an org that can help you. soldiers like you. i have lost the link.

did you sign the contact yet? you may get out it now early if they lied.

  10. Something similiar happened to my brother, who was being harrassed by the Marines.  In his case, my mom got in contact with a congressman from our state, who then put pressure on the recruiters to leave my brother alone.   I don't think the border between the U.S. and Canada is real heavily patrolled, but I don't think they just want anyone wandering up there, either.

  11. You do not get officially sworn in until you get through inprocessing at your first station - this is usually where you report for boot camp/basic training and is not MEPS.  I personally did the oath 5 times! Even then the military has a period of time before the contract cannot be easily  overturned by the recruit. However, you did sign a contract and that needs to be dealt with. Contact your Senator and explain the situation. Even better though would be to contact a lawyer. There are many available who are civillians themselves but specialize in this type of situation. The longer you wait the worse it will become.

The recruiter is there to get you to join and the more numbers he gets the better off he is to his superiors. I know recruiters who lost rank because they didn't make their quota. Loss of rank is loss of money and effort. Your recruiter is obviously using a threat tactic which probably works quite often. So sad but also illegal - report his a$$. As a veteran I can tell you that the ones they get this way can make things h**l for the other soldiers. They are dangers to themselves and others and usually become serious problems in the first year or even months. I had a battle buddy in basic who became so stressed she started hurting herself as she slept at night - scratching her face and pulling out all her eyelashes! Another girl was removed from basic but not until she tripped out on the firing range!

Forget Canada and just face the challenge of your reconsideration. Canadian Courts ruled that US AWOL soldiers are NOT refugees and you will be returned to the US.  Read this:
