  1. Well, I know what you mean, I play tennis as well, just work on making half steps before hitting a volley, and practice hitting at an angle to a corner. You can also improve by practicing volleying half-hearted, cause that usually messes my opponent up. (Half-hearted means standing at the service  line to volley.)

  2. Hey troubled tennis player,

Its very hard to tell you how to improve your game without seeing what you currently do, but let me make a suggestion.

If you are not hitting with a private coach, i think you should do some research in your area, see who is good, and go for a few lessons.

If you find the right coach who can really help take you to the next level it is more than worth it.

In the meantime, you should just go to my site though:

  3. go to score

  4. You are going to want to play as much as possible.  I remember when I was trying to get better I would play 6 hours a day minimum.  Play people better than you, people the same level as you, and people a little worse.  That way you will still have confidence, but also see how better players play.  Play as many tournaments as possible.  Just play lots and lots and lots and you will get better!

  5. Well, it is impossible that you have mastered everything.  You need to keep on working on your weak points and keep on making your strong points stronger.  You can always get better at tennis.

  6. Pretty good? That means your groundstrokes, and volleys have both pace, spin and directional control? You have great footwork coverage and can reach most balls? Your serve has good pace and you can hit a nice kick serve on your 2nd serve?

If you answered yes to all of these you'll need to start playing matches against tougher opponents. All the best strokes in the world will not prepare you for the strategy of tennis. Some people will serve and volley you to death and cut off your alleys. Some will counterpunch you until you make the inevitable unforced error.

Its great to have good strokes but now you have to focus on instant decision making. Should you go down the line, or should you hammer his back hand a little more before going inside out on your forehand. Also there's ALWAYS someone better than you unless you name is Roger Federer or Rafa Nadal. Play better players and your inadequacies will become clear. Work on them and have a rematch and then see how much you've progressed.

Youtube and the messageboard at tennis-warehouse.com have great resources and drills you can do. Video tape yourself playing, and review your form. Is your footwork good? Is your split step timed perfectly? Can you predict where your opponent's shot is going immediately after it leaves his string bed?

Theres always room for improvement. Even Andy Roddick's serve which can go 155 mph could use improvement in his placement. Good luck and stay motivated!
