Well i am nearly 16 (is this the rightage for the part? i can act younger/older if required.) and i am about to audition for the role of dorothy in the lowry theater, manchester. The daughter of judy garland (lorna luft!) is going to play the wicked witch!!!!! :) I have green eyes and curly brown hair, average-slim build and i can sing and act well. Do i suit the part?

What exactly is dorothys personality?

I have to prepare a song of my choice to sing, but i don't want to singsomewhere over the rainbow (i have a feeling everyone else will be singing that!) any suggestions of suitable songs that i could sing?

And finally, any other tips for nerves, etc. when i audition?

Thanks!

  1. DOROTHY IS A BIT YOUNGER AND MORE NAIVE THAN THE AVERAGE 16 YEAR OLD. SHE IS SWEET AND SINCERE AND KIND OF WIDE EYED ABOUT THE WORLD - ESPECIALLY A WORLD LIKE OZ! SO YOU WANT TO PLAY HER ABOUT 12-13.

THE KEY TO A GOOD AUDITION IS TO HAVE FUN! IF YOU LOVE TO ACT AND SING THINK OF THE AUDITION AS A CHANCE TO DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE TO DO. YOUR ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM WILL BE JUST EXACTLY WHAT THEY WILL LOVE FOR THE CHARACTER OF DOROTHY. USE YOUR NERVOUS ENERGY  AS EXCITEMENT FOR THE SCENE AND SONG.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT - I THINK AN INTERESTING CHOICE TO SING WOULD BE "TAKE A CHANCE ON ME" FROM MAMA MIA - BUT SING IT SLOW AND REALLY SINCERE LIKE YOU WANT SOMEONE YOU HAVE A HUGE CRUSH ON  TO TAKE A CHANCE  ON YOU  - SING IT LIKE THE TEMPO OF "SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW" SLOW AND SWEET AND A LITTLE WISTFUL AND SAD. I THINK IT WILL IMPRESS THEM WITH YOUR UNIQUE INTERPRETATION OF A SONG FROM ANOTHER HIT MUSICAL.

MY OTHER SUGGESTION WOULD BE THE SONG "DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA" FROM EVITA. IT IS A BIG, BEAUTIFUL EMOTIONAL SONG AND THAT IS WHAT THEY NEED TO HEAR - THAT YOU CAN HANDLE THE VOCALS AND EMOTIONS OF "OVER THE RAINBOW" BUT YOU'RE RIGHT - THEY WILL BE SICK OF HEARING THAT SONG FRO EVERYONE ELSE.

REMEMBER - HAVE FUN - FUN IS CONTAGIOUS! THEY ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE THE AUDIENCE WILL LOVE AND ROOT FOR IN HER QUEST FOR OZ!

    GOOD LUCK!

  2. Hey, that's awesome!

ok, i know i'm not the most experienced person, but i also act in musicals and stuff so i hope this all helps

You sound perfect for the job with your looks and seeing as though you can sing and act well you should be fine.

And as for what song to sing, something that can show your range would be great, but not too hard.

I just got rejected from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, mainly becuase of the pianist didnt know my song and i hadn't sung it for that long so sing something you know!

everyone gets nervous and im not sure it can go away all that quickly, but just kinda be prepared for anything!

i hope this wasnt too long and boring and i hope it helps! =D

  3. I don't know if you are right for the part, I am not the director and I don't know your director.  That you have to wait for the audition.  The same play, by 3 directors will become 3 plays, each different and distinctive.

Stage fright is easy. Use it.  Take those butterflies in your stomach, throw them into the auditorium, catch them when they come back ( full of love).  Repeat the cycle.  And know your part.

    Peace.
