I have just received confirmation for a position to work. The problem is my family is against me working b/c of my health and the fact that my last position didn't go very well due to a few seizures on the job. The last few weeks my medication has kept me seizure free but they are still concerned, not to mention this job requires 8-10 hrs a day & they know I have Epilepsy. Please tell me....what should I do?

  1. Take the job.  Don't tell your employer about your condition.  Legally in accordance with Americans with Disabilities Act, you don't have to tell them but they must accomodate you if necessary.  You can be a productive employee and still have epilepsy.  These laws protect your right to work.

  2. Don't let  this discourage you . I was an epileptic and grew out of it and have been seizure free since I was 26. Your family is right to be concerned.

Get all the facts. As long as your new employer knows all of the data and is willing to work with you, their should not be a problem. what kind of work would you be doing? What kind of seizures do you have and how often? Is it safe for you to drive to this job or do you have another safe way to get to & from work?

Another thing to think about is:

Is this work environment seizure friendly? Will your co-workers know what to do in case of a seizure or will they freak out?

Just have all the facts & bring it to your family. Good luck!

  3. I think you should accept the job if you feel healthy enough to start. My mum has epilepsy and she has been free of seizures for 15 years.  Your family are obviously just concerned but if you feel ok and are seizure free then you should take the job. The fact your employers know about it menas they obv dont see it as problem. thousands of people with disabilities work so it shouldnt hold you back!

    Goddluck!
