What is "masa harina" and where can I find it? Also, to everyone who has tasted it, is it good?

If your from el salvador what is your favourite food from there?

I'm trying to surprise my friend who is visiting us from el salvador ^^

  1. Masa harina is corn flour.  It is normally prepared with lime and is used for making tortillas, tamales, and pupusas of course.  It goes by many names, including Maseca, La Piña, and many others.

It is not the same as baking flour or corn meal, by the way.

You can find masa harina in the latin section of your major grocery store, or in latino markets.  If you have a tortilleria (tortilla factory) nearby, you can buy fresh masa directly from them and make the pupusas.

The flavor is great and there is very little difference between masa harina and fresh masa.

on the link below, there is a recipe and instructions on how to make pupusas and curtido.

    Best of luck and enjoy!

  2. It's a flower/cornmeal type of stuff. My husband (he's from ES) uses Maseca (which you can find really easily here in the states in your baking isle) and he says it's really similar to masa harina.

Oh he adds a pinch of salt  to taste

I'm not a native but some of the foods I enjoy that my husband cooks is the pupusas and my favorite desert his aunt makes is called maria luisa. YUM!

  3. My family is Salvadorean

    and omgg i LOVE pupusas

    theey are amazing.

  4. Safeway carries it.  Most store have an ethnic or Hispanic section, you'll find it there. The brand I see  in my area is Maseca.

It Is corn flour/meal. It is what the tortilla is made from. make sure you get the right kind of cheese cheddar or american just don't cut it.

    bon appetit'

  5. i'm salvadorean! I can prepare a really good pupusas LOL if you want i can pass you out my recipe =)

  6. masa harina is the flour.....MASECA would be your best option, very easy, you just add water lol

now, you can make cheese pupusas (typically you use quesillo, but you can replace it with mozzarella, works the same way) or "de frijol con queso" (cheese and beans...refried beans) .... I dont know how to make the curtido tho, but its very good and you can always make salsa (tomato sauce, kinda like the sauce you put on tacos)

I am salvadoran and my favorite salvy food would be pupusas, yuca, EMPANADAS omg I love empanadas (theyre kinda like pupusas but instead of flour you use plantain and theyre filled with beans or milk...not liquid tho, its thick hahaha its hard to describe...then you put sugar on them...yummie)

    also love nuegados
