I am thinking about joining the airforce. The thing is that I have some college hours about 36 hours but no degree. I want to do something with networking or programing so the one that I found under the AF website was Network Infrastrusture apprentice and missile & Space Systems Electronices Matienance ICBM or AICM. My worry is that if i join I dont want to be placed on a crappy job . I want to be in the tech field. So, since I have a lack of a degree will I get placed on a tech job or will I be able to get a job with high sercuity cleancer or will they just stick me as a cook. How do they judge that and I also want to know about if i do land a tech job what is the odds of being depolyed(I do want to help out our country and I dont mind to die for our country( the way i look at it you can die as easy here in the states but with no honor) but i want to do something that I enjoy doing. So, If i am fixing a computer and a bomb hits i will be happy. I also want to know do they they really help you out with school due to i will really like to go back and get a degree in computer science. Please serious answers from people who joined, who know someone that join, has family that joined I want answer from people who know this.

  1. YOU SHOULDNT REALLY ASK FOR YOUR DECISION HERE THIS IS A BIG ONE THET YOU NEED TO MAKE YOURSELF

  2. Wise decision.

War mongering presidential candidates running for office this year and a war mongering current President.

Good time to join in....... oh wait

  3. Make sure you have the job you want on your contract before you leave.  That way you won't end up doing something else.

You'll be able to go in as a A1C because of your previous college credits, and talk to a recruiter, because they may be able to help you pay off college debts, if you have any.

Now, once you get the career field you want, things can very depending on the location and command you work for.  But you'll do that specific job you go to tech school for.

I am currently in the USAF, and I love it, I have got to work with different air frames, and a few different deployments, so things have always been interesting and new.  I love my job.  I think you are making a wise decision.

It is also a brave decision, to serve during time of war, when your country needs you.

  4. Before you join you will take the ASVAB, wich will let the military know what you excell in.  Once you have met the requirements to do a job and pass the physical exam, you will see a job specialist.  If you enlist with a contract listing the job you want, you will get it as long as you remain qualified.  As for clearences they don't give them out.  You will have a secret upon graduating Basic.  From there your job and "need to know" will dictate you level of clearance.  I am retired AF and after a short stint in another branch, I'm telling you the Air Force has the best facilities on base, and treat you better.  I saw 19 countries and all 50 states.  Enjoy.

  5. Good luck. I understand that the USAF is having no problems meeting it's recruitment quotas and is actually turning away people. Your education will give you a step up on the average HS grad. Talk to a recruiter.

And unless you get run over by a truck, you probably won't be dying.

  6. It sounds like you need to talk to your local recruiters. I think you should talk to recruiters from all branches so you know you have made an informed decision. People are often misled when it comes to talking to recruiters. You CAN NOT join the military from thier office so there is no threat in asking questions. They will, however, "prequalify" you and if you appear to be a potential candidate you may recieve follow up calls from the recruiters. Just be honest with them when they call and tell them what your plans are.

My oldest son just joined the Airforce last year and currently I am a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy and was a recruiter myself so I know a little about it. Based soley on what you have written it is possible that your exsisting college credits could have you enlisting as an Airman First Class (E-3) paygrade. That is almost a two year head start on everyone else (and more money) As was with my son, when you go to MEPS "Military Enlisted Proccessing Station" the Airforce will do everything in it's power to garantee you the job field you want in writing BEFORE you enlist. You have to realise that first of all, you have to qualify for the job and secondly there has to be availability in that field. Your Airforce recruiter can give you more details.

Be SURE and ask about the programs and benifits the US military offers for extended education. It will BLOW YOUR MIND!!! You will be so mad you ever spent a dime to get the credits you have now.

As for deployment...that's what we do my brother. I don't like leaving my family, no one does. But nothing and I mean nothing makes me prouder than knowing that people at home can sleep peacefully at night because warriors like me and my brothers and sisters are vigilantly on watch.

  7. Because of your college hours you get go in at a higher rank.

Given your experience you'll probably score high in those areas of the ASVAB test.

The AF tries to place you into a field that best matches your aptitudes and the needs of the AF.  You can't always get the exact job you want, but into a job family.

With only few exceptions almost all AF personnel are being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan for 6 month rotations.

Yes they do provide tuition assistance while you're in and you can signup for the Montgomery GI Bill (costs $1000) to provide education assistance when you get out.

I have two sons in the AF and one in the Army
