  1. Rome, Venice, Florence

  2. In three weeks you can cover a lot of ground here. One thing you need to know is that in the period around Easter, a lot of people travel. Some trains that do not normally require reservations will be reservation only. There are trains added to the schedule to accomodate some of the overflow though.

Must see should depend on your particular interests, but if you've never been in Italy before, you'll want to see Florence, Rome and Venice. Florence has an interesting Easter celebration (the Explosion of the Cart) if you happen to be there on Easter Sunday. http://www.vps.it/new_vps/articolo_eng.p...

You can use each of these cities as a base for interesting day trips using the train system. From Venice, Padova, Verona, and Treviso are all interesting and worth visiting. From Florence, you could go to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower and then take the train another 20 minutes to Lucca for the rest of the day. Siena is a very interesting place to visit and an easy trip by bus or train. San Gimignano is another place worth a visit. Arezzo also has an interesting old town.

From Rome, you can easily get to Pompeii, Capri, Orvieto, Tivoli (see Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este), Antica Ostia or other locations. You could also stay in Naples for Capri, Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.

If the weather is good, Cinque Terre is an interesting destination in March. It won't be as crowded as in the peak tourist season or as hot for walking the trails between the five towns.

If you're interested in local festivals, Sulmona also has an interesting one for Easter: http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht...

Rome will be packed for Easter, but that's another possibility.

There are several places here with on-going Jazz Festivals in March.
