Why am I having such a hard time finding a permanent position, I realize the job industry sucks right now, just want to know if there are any others out there with the same problem. I have sent out the resumes (and its a good one done professionally) and I get no response......at all. Am I doing something wrong?

  1. The economy sucks, very few companies are growing, most are cutting back.

Unless you happen to be in an unusual business that defies current trends ,all you can do is keep looking .

An additional thought is whenever possible , apply and interview in person.

  2. i swear you avatar looks like she's 51 1/2 TOPS!!  i don't think it has anything to do with your age, or physical appearance, unless you mentioned your age and phyical appearance on your resume (which would be odd). it probly just has to do with demand for positionsin your personal skills category. Keep trying.

  3. I'm reluctant to tell you this but I had a similar experience at about the same age.  I had worked practically all my life as a secretary (mostly legal).  After becoming the office manager and doing the accounting  I lost my job due to a "restructure program".  Reason being that I did not have a college education and they wanted someone more educated.  My replacement was a 24-year old college graduate who requested that the employer keep me for five or six weeks so I could assist him with procedures, etcetera.   I contacted the Labor Department as well as others but did not receive any relief through them.  I, too, sent out scads of resumes but very few responses.  Ended up taking a job with one of the state agencies at a little over half of what I was accustomed to earning.   BUT, good luck and I wish you the best.

  4. No, but there is ageism although no one will admit to it. I registered at six employment agencies, posted my resume on Monster and yahoo hot jobs and checked out my classifieds and craigslist.com every day.

You need to be persistent and dedicated, looking for work is the hardest FT job there is, but well worth it when you find your job.

  5. Hi Lyly,  it happens all the time here in Singapore. they discriminate above 50 when comes to interview but in papers, they published lots of those small percentage examples of above 50 still working with a fair chance... Bullshit! it's only a government myth... Even karate referees have to retire by 61... (World Karate-do Federation's rule)

  6. Go to a professional headhunter who can evaluate your resume (does it have typos?) and point you in the right direction.

You don't mention what industry you are qualified to work in. Some are hot right now, and some are terrible. If you're a real estate agent or work in the building industry, it's not a surprise that you're not getting nibbles. If you're a nurse or work in the renewable energy field, you're doing something wrong.

  7. There are way to many variations here...you don't even give the industry or what country your working in.

  8. Have you been out of work for a long time?  Gaps in employment?  What are your skills?  People with strong skills are finding jobs.  Make sure you write a cover letter that is different for each job you are applying to.  You might go to a temp agency and at least get your foot in the door to begin.  They will also give you some tests.  If you are not even being called for interviews then something is not right with the resume or cover letter.  It would help if you had shared your skill set.  When all else fails go pick up some courses at your local college, get certified in something.  (college prof who assisted  3 "older" women to get jobs last month by redoing resume and practicing interviewing skills)

  9. If you're including your work in feminism in your resume,  you're asking not to be hired. Face it, feminists are thought of as perpetual complainers and fault-finders.
