My American girlfriend lives and works in the U.S. We plan to get married in the future and would both like to settle in America. I would like to work there so we can buy a new home together. Does anyone know how I should go about doing this?

  1. apply for a work visa

  2. you  need a visa or a work visa from the US, and a British passport.

you get it by going to the US Embassy in England ( or whatever British country you are in.)

or you can go to their website, fill out their forms, mail them back, and wait a while.

  3. Marrying her is the easiest and quickest way.

Do you have a Bachelor's degree or higher? If so then you are in with a shot at an H1B but it is by and large just a lottery and you would need an employer to sponsor and petition you and to get their application in by April 1st 2009 for you to start in October 2009. Again there are no guarantees of a visa, due to there being more applicants than visas available.

If you work for a company with offices in the U.S. then look at an L1 company transfer.

Beyond the above, the chances are zero since there are no other options. Look at marriage.

  4. Contact the embassy of the country in America you want to go to

  5. get a visa or marry your girlfriend

  6. Well it's a bit tricky.  They don't just give out work permits.  You have to be a professional (have a degree).  You have to find a company willing to sponsor you.  Or you can go to school in America and once you graduate you can get a work permit (OPT) that is good for one year and then can apply for HB-1.  Of you can try to apply for a "fiance visa" if you are engaged.  Your fiance would have to sponsor you and fill out the paper work.
