I am a Filipino lady marrying a Canadian, is it necessary to register our marriage with the Canadian Gov.???

We are not planning to immigrate anytime soon but may in the future. When will I be eligible for Canadian passport??? How does it works???? Thanks...

  1. If you are in Canada, yes. If not, no.

    If you want to emigrate to Canada you will need to apply for residency. You make your application when you are ready to immigrate (well, 6-12 months before would be good as it takes a long time to process).

    If you are successful in getting residency then, after a few years of living in Canada (and not leaving!), you will become eligible to apply for citizenship.

    If you are successful in getting Canadian citizenship, then you can apply for a Canadian passport.

    Note that marrying a Canadian is not an automatic guarantee of getting Canadian residency or citizenship.
