  1. It all depends.  While Australians are more than welcome in the U.S., New Zealanders are often considered, and I quote, "Too dumb, too ugly, too fat, too tan, and too sheepishly disgusting."

If you can pass yourself off as Australian you might do OK.

  2. My sister in law (Kiwi) had the similar problem when my brother her husband (American) decided to go back to the USA. You will need a green card so you can work and also you need to apply for a social security number and a Medicaid card.

When I went to New Zealand to visit them she told me of all the hassles she had even enrolling my nieces into school over there. Your best bet is to call the US consulate in Auckland or look them up on line. I had hassles when I tried to extend my visitor visa while I was in New Zealand and I'm a permanent resident in Australia. I thought they would give a waver because I live in Australia, because I'm an American citizen they didn't. So it would be best to check it out before you go as immigration from New Zealand to the US is totally different from Australia. I found that out myself like my sister in law did. My nieces told me Americans didn't know where New Zealand is and asked them both how could Europeans speak English so well (Tee Hee). After a year they all came back to NZ, You will have a choice time over there.

So your best bet is for you to both check it out fully before you go.
