I have spent 6 years for my PhD in Management and I have passed it. I am applying for jobs in Finance industry and the job agents said that I am lack of industry experiences. Employers are looking for a candidate who has strong financial backgrounds. They said that my CV is good (e.g. knowing a bit programming, very good at Maths and Stats, some finance and accounting knowledge) but they told me that my CV is too academic. Employers won't employ someone who has high academic background with no finance industry background. I really don't want to stay in academic and I am looking forward to work in finance industry. I have tried to apply management consultant and research analyst but........no replies....Oh...poor me! Could someone offer me some advices? Ta very much.

e.g.1 how to improve my academic CV?

2 Where can I get the PhD career seminar?

3 any other advices...?

Thanks.

  1. As far as UK employers are concerned, having a PhD means that you're over-qualified, over-specialised, and under-experienced. In the UK a PhD is mainly a passport to an academic or research career. Sad but true.

  2. Go to your careers centre within the university. They will have opportunities with companies that can work on a 'training' basis. where you can work for them while gaining experiences on effectively a lower wage, a bit like training for a couple of years.

I'm surprised you have left it so long, most companies who are interested in you will either sponsor you during your Msc. and Phd. to give you an offer once you pass? Also during your Msc. I would of thought you would of done on the job training as part of the modules..

Anyway, speak to the university careers department and see if they can help you first.
