My fiance and I plan to marry in couple of months. Reading so much about the difficulties, I am skeptical now. I hope to know more, esp from those who has gone through the experience. Sleepless now due to worries. Thanks in advance for kind attention to my query.

  1. You are still a Singaporean through and through after marriage. However, you may qualify for a spousal visa to live in the UK if you meet the requirements. If after being married to a British citizen and living in the UK for 3 years you may be able to apply for naturalization.

  2. maybe a few answersfor you...

    1. if you want UK citizenship...then u have to give up singapore citizenship...no duo citizenship

    2. you need to apply for the PR. it's not given to you straight after marriage but marriage do boost the chance of getting one...

    3. both of you keep your own citizenship and apply PR for each other's country.

    4. you will have to find out from the British commission if they recongise singapore marriage certificate as a support document for UK PR application and vice versa.

  3. I know how you must be feeling now. I am marrying an American in 3 months and just got to know that our "pristine" status of visa waiver program actually worked against our favor and we have to live apart for a few months before I can join him in San Francisco.

Here's a question for you - Why are you skeptical? About marrying your fiance or the prospect of gaining UK citizenship/PR status?

Marriage alone does not automatically help you gain status. You still have to file a petition. And you need to decide if both of you want to stay here in Singapore or in the UK. You can file for PR for your husband after wedding if you choose to stay here. The process will take upwards of 3months. Be sure to check on the maximum length of time allowed for him to remain in SIngapore until paperwork is completed.

Whichever country you ended up staying in, you will still need to check with the relevant authorities. I would suggest that you start with British High Comm asap - http://www.britishhighcommission.gov.uk/...

Good luck and keep your chin up!
