I am a born Canadian citizen and now in the US trying to get a job,I don't have a social security number so it has been difficult to get employment. I have a support system here in the US so that's why I opted to be here as oppossed to Canada where I don't have anyone. Money of course is pretty tight and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how to maybe get a cash paying job and what is available until I can work out my situation....any ideas would be appreciated. Are there any simple avenues for Canadians to work in the US? I really need a plan.

  1. You will need a work visa and a social security number to work legally in the U.S.  Start with the visa.

  2. Why? Do you have a perminent Visa?  Unemployment is at just 5%.  If you don't have a perminent Visa, I'm not sure i would hire you either.  That means you are going to have to leave.

  3. The reason it's difficult is that you're not supposed to be working in the U.S. without a Social Security number and a green card. You shouldn't be surprised that you're having a hard time finding work as you're not supposed to be working.

It's like anything else in life, if you're not supposed to be doing it, and you try to do it anyhow, it's not easy to do.

You may have a support system in the U.S., but you have no right to seek or accept employment. You do not have permission to stay in the U.S. as if you were a permanent resident.

  4. I'm not sure on the specifics, but do you have a work visa?  A friend once checked into this a few years ago, and without  a guaranteed job, they were told they needed a sponsor.

I dont know where you live, but perhaps some more agricultural type work (landscaping, farm work, etc.) might pay cash at the end of each day to have extra hands and a strong back to assist.

You might want to contact a local employment service or legal aid, as well.
