if you are a 1099, then you need to set aside about 30% to 40%  of your gross income so you will have money to pay your taxes in April.

Yes, but it's barely worth the ATO's while collecting it! On $6,600 a year, your tax payable (if you're a full-time resident for 2008) is just $90. You should get all that, and more, back in Centrelink benefits.
