But you can use any diminutive that you want to speak to an animal, and it's important to remember that a noun retains it's gender even if you are referring to another one.

Your dog is male but you can say, Ciao patata (or patatina) or Gioia mia.

Other common diminutives- amore, tesoro, gioia, etc. And all express love and/or fondness.
