What should I take/eat to supplement the vital nutrients found in meat? I have heard that soy has a lot of estrogen. Are there any other types of food or pills I could take? Also, does anyone know some quick and easy vegetarian meals? Either personally or websites which provide them. Thanks.

  1. the only thing that veggies need worry about is b-12, i believe and you can purchase a vegetarian multiple (the vegans ones STINK, literally.)  if you eat a well balanced diet the majority of the time, you will get all the nutrients you need but i am a veggie and eat all kinds of junk.

as far as recipes, i am afraid i am a bit stunted since i hate to cook and taco bell lets me substitute beans for meat.  there are a trillion recipes though and try some of the "fake meats."  i have found that boca makes delicious "chicken" patties and ribs.  also, fantastic world foods makes a sloppy joe mix sold in stores that is to die for.  they are very similar in taste and texture, which as a newbie, you might enjoy.  fledgling veggies who take small steps generally stay veggies (myself included) and it is easy to become overwhelmed by restrictions.  good luck.

  2. Try a multi-vitamin that contains iron.  You can also find iron in dark green vegetables like spinach.  Make sure you get enough protein, which is found in soy, nuts, beans, etc.  Most vegetarian substitutes are made with soy.

If you type 'vegetarian recipies' into any search engine, I guarantee you will find plenty.

  3. Bread, pasta, cereal, rice, beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, fruits and veggies can easily offer everything that you need except B12.

All vegetarians should take a B12 supplement regularly since most people eat meat, dairy AND fortified cereals yet still have a B12 status that is lower than recommended.

It may help you if you see proof that vegetarians have the same potential as anyone else.

If you need meat or dairy during any stage of your life or to live any certain lifestyle, why does the American Dietetic Association say otherwise?
