I am a full time student and i want to start a part time job, will it affect my income support &h.benefit?

Yes it will affect both you Income Support and Housing Benefit. You have to work under 16 hours per week or you loose all entitlement to Income support. If you work over 16 hours you my be eligible for working tax Credits instead, depending on your circumstances.

You are allowed to keep a certain amount (a disregard) depending on your circumstances. the disregards are:

Single Person 5.00

Couple 10.00

A disabled person or lone parent 20:00

To be classed as disabled you must be getting a Disability premium included in your income support payment or have DLA

You get to keep the above amounts without it affecting your benefits depending which group you are in.

After the disregard anything you earn is subtracted from your benefit pound for pound.

For example if you are termed disabled your disregard is 20. If you earn 50 per week it would affect you like this

50 -20 = 30

30 would be deducted from your rent and housing benefit, so you can only be better off to the values set out above (5,10,20 pounds), which unfortunately makes working and claiming IS/HB not an attractive idea.

yes it proberly would, it isn't fair sometimes but it is how it works, you can work up to 16 hours though, with out it being affected, I think.

Yes. Anything you earn after the first fiver will be taken off your IS and your housing benefit will be reduced proportionately. i take it youre at college rather than Uni and thats why youre not getting a grant/loan etc.
