i am a semi advanced guitarist ( I'm only 14). I have been teaching myself guitar with the progressive guitar method series of books. I want to be a professional guitarist when i get older, and i am asking for suggestions on how to get better. If you know of any books, exercises, or websites that would help please tell me.

also i play acoustic and electric guitar, and i can finger-pick and i can also use a pick.

And I would like to learn a wide range of guitar styles (classical, rock, jazz, etc)

  1. Hi there

Here is a good link for scales. If you want to be proficient, you definitely need to know your scales.

  2. You-Tube has tons of videos to watch for free.

If you are serious, I'd look into getting a college degree in music with a guitar specialty.

I also suggest that you find a local teacher whom you think really knows how to play and pay him/her for a lesson once per week.

Think about joining a band and/or writing your own music.

Join the band at your school.

Go to the local college near you and get a list of the concerts that the school of guitar are performing and go see every show.

    (they are usually free)

Try to make friends with some of those people at the college and they might be available for lessons.

Make sure you also make time every day to take care of your health.

    1. Get plenty of sleep each night.

    2. Get some exercise every day, like walking, biking, running

    3. Eat healthy foods so that your brain will be at it's best so you can be the best guitar player you can be.

    4. Talk to a good friend every day about your day. Don't be a hermit like some guitarists who don't have any friends.

    Good luck!

  3. as a guitar player(i also teach myself and im also 14) i have learned many things and one of those things are that you can only get so far by yourself.  i would suggest that you join a rock band that has a guitar part for you.  when you get into school you need to post posters all over the school for musicians to contact you if they would like to join your band.  when you do that, you can access all of the other peoples music styles and learn from them.  or you can get a teacher or both.  look up "guitar techer living in (wherever you live)"

i play alto sax, and although i have been playing it for over a year i accell at it, and i make my own music.  and in that expirience i can say that jazz is the hardest, then classical, then rock, for a sax player.  i dont know what is hardest for a guitarist though.

tip for jazz:  on an eigth note, the down beat is longer than the up beat and the up beat is shorter than the down beat.  just look up "jazz styles" if your confused.

tip for classical:  classical is emotional and you have to feel the beat inside you to fully understand what the music is supposed to be.  practice this by:  whenever you hear music, tap your finger or toe to the beat.

tip for rock:  rock music is the most fun because it is about you.  go crazy and have fun, but dont forget to be god.

    i hope i helped you
